ATF works well, and is recommended by the factory, but I'm running syntrans in my series 2 disco R380 (which is also suggested by the factory)... No particular reason for running syntrans, except for a hope that it'll provide smoother shifts warm (bit crappy cold though!), and promote longer life than the ATF.
84 Rangie, 3 inch spring lift, 2 inch body, Megasquirted 4.6, R380, rear Maxi, 34x11.5 JT2s. Simex FM installed.

ATF ceased to be recommended by the factory in about 98 when they found gearboxes were being worn out - MTF94 is now factory recommended.
SynTrans provides a good compromise between cold morning starts and hot running.
