Got a phone call from a mechanic mate of mine this afternoon...I was in the area so I called in to his workshop to see what all the fuss was about.

The story behind it is as follows....

Lady rang him early in the morning, saying that the brakes on her 80 series suddenly started making a grinding noise on her way to work...could he have a look at it, and fix whatever was causing the problem?

He gets it up on the hoist and this is what he discovers. :shock: :shock:

My mate said that when he tried to seperate the rotor and hub (or whatever that bit is called - not my mates words either, I just cant remember the proper name for it) the rotor literally fell apart.

The pads were none excistant, and the pistons in the caliper were well and truely r@@ted! Now keep in mind that the brakes only started making the grinding noise this morning. pfft. I wonder what sort of noise they were making for the last few months :?

Told my neighbours wife that she had no brake pads left and sparks were comming out under braking. She ignored me and continued like that for another 2 months. Cost them a packet to repair.

i was comin back from sydney the other day and i put my foot on the brake and it sounded like my pads were screwed but when i got home i pulled the wheel off and i noticed the calliper moved and i looked under it and the bottom bolt was gorn out of the calliper so when ever i put my foot on the brake the calliper was rising up at the back and grinding on the back of my rim so i think its worth checkin ur calliper bolts ppls

I had the same problem... only it hadn't been making any noise. I found out too late when it moved often enough to snap the brake line at the bottom of the chicken track in Ormeau... vice gripped it and pulled the last of the tracks.

I chased a stupid biatch in Sydney one night that had had a flat tyre in her Daewoo shitbox and continued to drive coz she had no idea how to change a tyre.

Ok, seen plenty of people do this, but the smoke from the disintegrated tyre and then the rim grinding on the road surface went from the city, over Anzac Bridge all the way to Haberfield when I finally made her stop before she farkin killed somebody. She wasn't driving real slow either :shock:

When she finally stopped the rim was ground down so far that the disc rotor was starting to grind on the road surface.

People always come into work saying stuff like... 'oh it was running hot since last friday, but i just kept going cause I only had to get to work, but it was ok when i drove it the next time, then today this steam started coming out everywhere'. :roll:

Least they got value for money out of the pads :D :rofl:

I worked on a commodore that was worn even more then that one and they had put 2 pads on one side so the piston didnt fall out :roll:

This is a little off topic,
My boss didn't service his mitsubishi challenger for 170,000km. finally decided to service it, got it back from the mech, was driving it for about an hour when it surged, and lost all power. what did he do? kept driving till he got where he needed to go, called the mech, got it towed.
turns out all the oil galleries had blocked up with the old oil which had turned to grease.
funnily enough after a degrease the motor is still going strong!! still no excuse for not servicing your car!!!
