5 litre in a cruiser
I had a search but cant find anything on this subject.I am after some feedback on the Holdon 5 litre efi in a cruiser and what its like any pros and cons cheers.
should go ok, if you have a little cash to throw around stroke it to 350
preferably something along the lines of a vr-vs 304 with vn 5l heads on it, good combo
saying this, you do know how much putting a v8 into an 80 series costs?
if you have a diesel, work the shit out of it and end up with a nicer truck
if you have a petty, then expect big dollars for the v8

304 can make 500hp no wories. on paper they make the same power as a 305 chev and r just as easy to modifie and r cheaper to buy than a ls1 5.7.
i'm not a fan of ls1's

Granted a 5Ltr can make big horses but the more ponies the more the fuel, so at what stage does a 304 push an 80 easily without a redicules fuel cost?
This is why I would of thought a 350 would be a better call as a stocka will produce more power and torque then a 304.

got a mate with a 304 in his 62s hi top. its RAD!!!!!!! drops line lockers on 33s no worries. he used a vn motor and cable auto. this setup works well in the bush.
another mate has a 350 chev and manaul, in the same 4x4.
the difference is to close to call.
reason he put it in was. fair reliable, parts are cheap and easy to find.
blower kits are cheap!!!!!!!!!!

Wouldnt bother rebuilding a motor, not when new crate motors a so resonably priced these days.Bigger-benny wrote:total cost around 10k or a bit less as i am helpin the engineer do it includes a rebuilt 5 litre but thats what i am unsure of.If i do it i dont wanna be pissed that i didnt do it right the first time.

i would swing towards five 0, these days u can buy complete motor , computer and harness for $1000 to 1500 every day of the week, most still with plenty of life left,
The cost of a gen111(5.7 or injected 350) is still five or six grand including computer and harness.
With the four or five grand u save u could rebuild five o or add supercharger or just blow it on piss if u like, in my personal opinion, i love to have as many ponies as possible but on this occasion if u r looking for reliabilty and fuel economy, then the standard five o would be your choice of beast

What RWKW or RWHP and tourqe figures are we looking at from the 4 ?
Cheers
Rick.
VX has slightly better intake, vy onwards have higher ring tension, power wise not much in it. Problem is there running a plastic intake so the only way you can run LPG is to inject em or put an after market alloy manifold that costs as much as the motor.
I know the 5.0 is popular with some of you here but they suck. Save your breath I have done em up for customers and in my opinion there a waste of money, with a reasonable cam, extractors, pipes, tune and all other associated bits they only make 165kw to 180kw, you can buy a GEN 3 these days from $1500-$2000 much better proposition.
gq wagon now a gq ute, straight gas tb42 with a thing on the side that makes it go fast
got a mate with a 5ltr in a 80s cruza. not worth the money you gunna spend. they are 185kw depending on what model and to work them you gotta spend big bucks. if you dont whant a diesel then better off with a rb30 turbo. the rb30 can handle 800hp as a standard block. the heads will need to be work for such power the the bottom end can take this power. dunno how long it will last at that power tho.
200 rwkw is easily acheivable on a rb30. and its only a matter of hiflow the turbo. a intercooler and injecters. then ya can to the heads, cam so on and so on. pluss the tourque is a massive gain on a turbo. keep in mind that you dont what a huge turbo because it will take ages to spool up. a small turbo that has been hiflowed is better for torque down low
hope this helps

so your saying a 5l v8 isn't good enough but he's better of with a 3l six.
sounds like kind of a down grade from whatr he has now and he'd have to work it to achieve performance.
keep it toyota and use a 4.5l cruiser six. of if not v8 a ford turbo 6

Why not just try a Ford 302 Cleveland? I have one in my 60 series and it goes great guns. Also, if you decide later on down the track you need more power than the 302 can give you can just swap a 351 straight in. The cleveland 351 and 302 have exactly the same engine mounts and attachments. They are essentially the same engine!

The 38s knock his gearing around heaps, I heard a rumour he only just pipped a 2.8 turbo Lux at Rover. I am sure it would have been a different story with the ratios donechunderlicious wrote:patrolden..... 5 litre with chip in his patrol alot of lift and 38s. still loves the power..... i recon youll love it.

Acutally if you read what he wrote, he said RB30 turbo.
Layto....

yeh i did read it corectly, layto.
but even a turbo rb 30 just wouldn't be right for a 80 series. it's just a little engine.
