sierra turbo info

Post by RB zook »

wat turbo would be recomended, is there a bolt on kit avaliable.
by turboing it would produce more torque than the 1600 engine swap.
has anyone done it

any info would be great.

If you want ti to be reliable use a GTI bottom end and use the Sierra head. Run a t 28 size roller bearing turbo and you will leave the 1.6 for dead.

The T28 came off the Nissan SR20 engine. The late model roller bearing ones are the turbo of choice.
Seeing these are off a 2Litre engine I would expect a bit of lag from a 1.3 before it spooled up. Probably not the best for low RPM off roading, you would loose torque. Of course there would be more torque in the higher RPM if all you want is to race the rice boys.
Easiest way to turbo match is to look for a turbo that handles around the same capacity of 1.3L. Usually factory turbos are undersized for the engines they are made for so going for something off a 1.6 is probably a better option.
It all comes down to what you want the car for. Answer that question and then find an appropriate turbo to match.
Danny (Zuker) has successfully mounted a WRX turbo to his 1.5L Zook.
Ask him about how it handles both on and offroad.
There is always the option to supercharge, plenty of torque right from idle but will loose it in the top end.
The choice is yours :D

yeah i would rather supr charge, it but the rather go forced induction to get more performance than doing an engine swap. i havnt heard of any superchargers for a 1300 but definatly it would be far superior to a turbo

Ok if you want to supercharge it then thats easy.
Find all the injection gear from a G16 SPI (manifold, wiring loom, computer) and put it on your G13. Next is to source a small supercharger from a Subaru 660cc engine. (not sure on the engine code) Mount it up and gear it to blow 2-3psi on your stock C/R and youll have bloody heaps of fun with it.
Will have heaps of power right off idle, perfect for offroad.

thanks for the info, G16 spi is that off the vitara fuel injected?

supercharger off a 660cc engine wont it be a bit small?

G16, 8 Valve, single point injection will bolt straight to the G13
Injection is so much easier with forced induction then trying to get your carby to run with it.
Few reasons why only small supercharger.
1) Your engine is still running stock C/R and wont hold up if running too much boost, it will detonate. Only need 2-3psi to get it to up and boogy.
2) The stock coimputer can still understand whats going on. Seeing its only an N/A computer, running boost through the engine can confuse it and cause it to run rough. There is always a little leeway in the computers, so keeping the boost low it wont confuse it. Unless you go for an aftermarket computer but then it would be cheaper to put the G16 in it in the first place.
I have seen this exact setup being run, it seems to be reliable without any dramas once setup properly.
As said before the supercharger will be great at low RPM but wont be able to keep up at higher revs so basically your back to your original G13 power range on the highway.

Not decrying what's been said above.
But if you get the Gti short block and keep the 8 V head, add a cam grind, a freeflow and a better carb 1600 valves if you want the icing, and you will have a motor that revs like a banshee and grunts as well.
That's my .02

I have a t3 of either z18 of fj20 there is a fair bit of lag does not do much till just before 3g but after that hold on. standard g13 still holding together, I reckon a t28 would be perfect I would not go smaller because the turbo is only for highway work anyway and if I ever find a 1.6 bottom end for the right price the turbo will still be ok.

As far as i know there isnt a bolt on kit for a turbo install.
I have a GTi engine with a 1500 bottom end and we made the custom manifold to mount the turbo.
And the only way yo uwill get it to ru right is install an aftermarket computer as it really needs to be fully tuned.

Driveability is awesome and offroad is unreal.

I am only running 7psi boost and that give me 71.2kw at the wheels, and we still havent finished tuning it.

If you want some more info email me zuker@zukernet.com

So could somebody list all the parts that would be needed to turbo the 1.3l?
To my knowledge so far..
- custom manifold
- turbo
- intercooler
- aftermarket ecu optionally
- wastegate (??)
- piping

what else?

We installed a turbo onto my gti engine.

Pretty easy job

Hardest part was the making of the manifold.

If i get enough interest i could look at getting a few more made.
Intercooler is really not required unless you want spastic horsepower and not to mention its hard to fit. I didnt put one in cause there wasnt enough room.

Things you will need:

Custom Manifold
Aftermarket ECU
Oil and coolant lines for the turbo
New fuel pump - depends on what you already have but any of the Bosch pumps suitable for efi, most common one is off a VL commodore
Pipework for the air intake for the turbo and air discharge from the turbo
Blow off valve
Boos Gauge
Good mechanic

By far the hardest part is the manifold and pipework. The rest is pretty easy. Wiring up aftermarket ECU on either a GTI or Vitara engine is really really easy. I used a EMS Stinger as they are around $1000 and do the job nicely. Check it out at http://www.enginemanagementsystem.com

I have a couple of pics up on the net at http://www.zukernet.com/projectzuk
I will take a few more pics tonight and post them up.

If anyone has any questions you can email me at zuker@zukernet.com or icq: 1750231

You can buy Aftermarket turbo GTi Manifolds these days as well. Dunno price though it's worth searching first rather than making your own.

Hmmm... someone posted some shots of their red EFI turbo Sierra a while back if you wanna do a search for it.

I have them at work...
