I dont class the 3.0td slow, my 2.4d is slow haha.

I dont know how the gearbox and diffs will take to big power, with a mix of bigger tyres etc etc.

the 1uzfe would be an option being a smaller motor. The hilux v6 4.0 would be an option.

Or you could buy a skyline :P

Actually im waiting for parts at the moment for a v8 conversion in my 91 hilux, i found that the lexus v8 (1uz-fe) is actually cheaper than a commodore 5 litre and puts out around the same power (around 200 kw).
Boof has a hilux your shape running a lexus v8, but he used a 4runner manual gearbox and transfer case which you would probably have to do for the commodore v8 anyways.

I believe your lux will be running the R15# box, which is the strongest of the bunch (for hilux). This is what a number of members have used behind their 1uz swaps with success

Having said that a 5.7l chev has a fair whallop more torque than the 1uz

Yeh the 5.7 gen 3 has more torque then a lexus v8, i thought peeko was talking about a 5 litre. Im using the lexus auto (A341) with my conversion but yeh it is the R series box you will be after if you decide on manual.

Only the very first VT's had the 5.0.

Given peeko has the 3.0TD, it should already be running the r-series, is that right?

Unless the rules have changes you cant go any bigger than a 5.0 in a Lux. I went the 1uz as said earlier and am happy with it. If you do go that way then your gearbox etc will be fine. I would suggest you at least go extractors to improve the 1uz bottom end. If you can afford it then aftermarket management is better again imo.

I am doing mine now, 3.0 5l IFS all that crap. Got a 5.0ltr V8, i reckon you wont get a 5.7 ltr in it the heads are alot bigger then a 5ltr v8. Have had to knock the heater fire wall in to make the head fit. engine mounts, grarbox, cluch, radiator all peice of piss, havn't had to cut or weld anything (except the sump). I haven't come across any rules on size just the year of the engine to the year of your ute, eg. if you got an 03 ute you have to have an 03+ engine.

No you dont in Qld anyway which is where the size restraint came from as well. I actually have a 96 model 1uz in mine and I looked into it as I had heard the same thing and thought I may have had to go a VVTI version.

And I thought V8's were dead ...... Hilux's should come out of the factory with them.

I did some measuring before on the surf when i was offered a cheap 5.7 gen3, and i doubt it would fit. Seeing how the 5.0 is as much of a tight fit as it is - and its bigger all round...

The 5.0 isn't a really tight fit at all, plenty of air space and room to move
for bolt ons like aircon, p/steer, alternator, etc.

I am almost too embarrassed to say, but you don't put a V8 in for fuel economy.

Mine needs a good going over on a dyno to find out why she's burning 20l p/100 on 4.3s.

Something must be wrong surely.

The LS1 will fit as this pic shows :D

But don't take any notice of Boof or Struth as the poor guys are on drugs :D as the only V8 to use is one of these and it easily returns 11-12L/100 cruising. :D

So besides not putting a Fomoco engine in what am I missing to be getting such lousy economy. The only things I haven't hooked up are the speed sensor and it still runs a pod filter rather then an airbox?

Struth

I don't know about the GM ecu but as far as the Ford goes a speed sensor reading is important so that could be an issue. Around town you won't get these figures as its hard not to use the gas pedal :D but cruising is no problems with mine.

Basically with any V8 it's just a matter of getting the engine running super efficient and matching the cruising rpm to your torque curve etc. This may also mean adding performance parts :D as most stock factory parts are a compromise in quality, cost and performance otherwise they would cost too much etc.

I also have a US doo dad for the Fords which allows me to adjust the MAF sensors signals so I can set the air fuel ratio to whatever I want, ie I can lean it off a tad for cruising purposes and turn it on when required etc.

But I don't really use that now as I have a selectable chip doo dad that has a 4 position switch so I can have 4 different engine tunes and go from either one at the flick of the switch, ie one for 4wd use, cruising, street and the lights :D.

I have a heap of new parts sitting in my shed for my new engine rebuild as the current engine has now done over 250.000k's and I've had a new US cam ground for mpg and torque so I'm expecting a lot better and a side benefit will be even more grunt :D but not at the expense of cruising mpg.

When the weather cools down I'll start building it and it will be a ripper :D.

I get mid 11L/100ks on the highway normal driving around town I can get 14L/100k. I normally get 16L/100k but thats with a heavy right boot and enjoying the extra power
