Hilux Diff weight

I have just snapped a chromoly rear axle in a Sierra and I am considering Hilux/Bundy diffs, searching tells me Sierra diffs weigh in at 40/60kg rear/front but I havn't found any weights on the Toyota diffs. My engineer is happy to cert the mod but is concerned about the weight as the GVM of the sierra is so low (there is countless other mods allready on it)

Anyone Know???

i know theyre DAM heavy... i tried lifting one end of a lux rear ages ago and struggled (i didnt expect it to be as heavy as it was)... i'd say they'd easily be in the 80kg range... perhaps call by a wrecker with your g/f or wifes scales??? =P

i built a custom rear diff and the engineer actually up'd my gvm.

The rear is heavy but I don't think it would be quite 80kg... (maybe 65/70...)
The front Hilux diff is a monstosity. I would think over 100kg. After my father and I rebuilt his Hilux front end, we had to use a 1/2 ton block and tackle to get the complete axle off the bench onto the floor. This was one of the post '84 housings with the bottom side gusset.

Wish I had hard numbers, but I don't own anything man enough to measure stuff this heavy.

Thanks for the info and tips so far, I questioned the GVM in regards to raising it and he claims it runs off the chassis however whilst not easy he may be able to get some more out of it so I will see how we go. I am still in the researching the swap and not 100% sure I will do it but I see no other option at this stage and apart from time and money I can see no disadvantage to the swap. Any other diffs (60, 80, patrol) I feel will be a fair bit heavier and probably much stronger than I need.

if you're doing hilux diffs you might aswell beef the chassis up while you're at it... then you can probably raise the GVM a fair bit.

This said though, my zuk with the 1.6l 8v engine, extractors, 2" pipe, hilux leaves, 31's on 15x7s, 25mm MDF in the rear door with stereo, speakers and a soft top full of water weighed in at 1040kg... i dare say without the bucketing rain at the time i'd have been around 1020kg - drop the MDF, speakers and stereo and ill be down about 1005kg... lose the softop and get about 1000kg etc etc.

You could also look into some alloy rims to save some weight =)

I wouldnt go as far as helium in the tyres tho! haha

Mine LWB is a fair bit heavier, it has alloys but with 33's plus bull bar, winch, 8 point cage, rails, rear bar etc its gotten very heavy so going to the weigh bridge allready involves alot of stripping. I just need the weights to compile with other info I am gathering as I like to present the engineer with the proposed mods all thought out and have some figures to show, things generally run easier that way.

tommorow night i will tell you what they weigh in got a pair in the shed ready to go in and will weigh em for you

method of weighing not very scientific it was a milk crate with plywood on top and bathroom scales on that with my lump of a teenage son balancing them. misses still going off about oil on the scales....

rear complete housing drum to drum with oil still in weighed at 68kgs
front complete disk to disk with steering arms and crossmembers attached with oil still in weighed a whopping 93 kgs

if anyone sees a little brown fury thing on the ground please mail in back to me its my ring ....hope this helps
