Does anyone know what cars came out with bearings in there starter motors? I'm going to attempt to make an electric endless air out of an old aircon pump and I have access to a few old starter motors from the tip and some mates' old wrecks.
Some people have suggested using a generator out of really old cars? I'm not to sure what this generator did or what wrecks I can find them on.
The pump will only be used occasionally to fill up 4 tyres and not to continually fill up an air tank like the onboard engine driven compressors do so I think a starter motor won't get to hot in that time.

I've never seen a car starter motor with bearings, they are all bronze bushes.
A starter is NOT suited to the application you wish to apply it.
They get very hot running for more than 30 seconds or so even with no load, as they are not vented and have no cooling fan.
A generator won't work either. The produce power when turned, they aren't a motor.
If you want to use an AC pump just make a bracket and bolt it to your engine.
OR
You could carry a bottle of CO2 or nitrogen.

Could some vent holes and/or a cheap little cooling fan help it out? In short... NO.
Starters are made for high load for a short time.
You want to do it the other way.
It will work but not for long and will use LOTS of battery power.
You may get away with a high speed motor (EG wiper motor) with a reduction drive but I can't think of anything that will have enough grunt to run an AC pump.
Just put an electric compressor in the back and sell the AC pump to someone who has room to fit it.

Warn make a winch/compressor combo. Not cheap (of course...).
If you want a motor for your compressor try an el-cheapo Chinese winch motor. Would be more suited for the moderate load/moderate duration duty cycle you need.

He sells pretty reasonably priced winch motors and solenoids.
I was looking at the starter idea but a winch motor would be much better suited and quite cost effective.

My sierra has got an endless air system on it and it's awesome at pumping up tyres etc and I want one my 80 series aswell but seeing as I have supercharged it and hopefully intercooling it in the not so distant future there won't be any spare space for the pump. That's why I'm thinking of an electric one. I'm picking up a starter motor and wiper motor this weekend out of a sigma so I'll be able to start making up a frame and testing it all out.

Alright done alittle bit of testing and here's the results thus far.
The wiper motor with gears turns way way way to slow to be of any use as the pump motor. I'm going to try it with no gears and see how it goes then. Its also only pulling 4amps with no load on it.
The starter motor was pulling 60amps with no load but the back came loose after 1 minute of running and it only got a little bit warm over that time span. It also needs to have new bushes. After all that it should be a goer I think

With some internal rewiring a generator can work as an electric motor - they are capable of producing significant power and torque without overheating.
All this of course comes at the expense of current draw no matter what motor you run... if you want power out you have to provide the input power
