stupid question????
I know this is a stupid question but why doesn't anybody weld shocks together??? end to end ????

They blow up when you weld them, thats why.
Some blokes can do it but its rare. I have seen Billstiens repaired but thats the only brand that I have seen as they can be done while dismantled.
Most shocks are throw away sealed items.
The heat can also bugger the seals & ruin the viscosity of the oil.
Edit: why would you want to weld them end to end, they would work wierd one would think?

Yes i have a 4x rancho 5000's but there short - 1 pair already have the pin on the shaft end cut off and replaced with eye, so becuase the very end of the shaft is the bit I was thinking of welding no to much heat would transfer to the other end where the gas is, the one's that i have didn't explode, and yes it does sound like it would work weird but why??? I'm thinking of mega length, and as per normal shock's if your spring set up is bump stopped correctly the shock will not top/bottom out

I'd guess to say that two shocks are dearer than one the right length and not everyone has another set of good condition shocks lying around. Shocks are generally stuffed after 50000km if you believe the suspension experts. That said even if you did do it then it would ride very wierd with two different valved shocks and even exactly the same valving would be wierd too I would think.

would having multiple shocks with multiple moving points create to much flex through the length causing faster wear on seals etc etc.
