need ur opinions boys. will have some money to spend soon and i want to do another big improvement on the truck. so i want the good and the bad. diff lockers or a front tube bar and winch. if i did the bar and winch id probably have to get the bar then waite a bit to get the winch. what do u reckon.
Edit: Also id b able to get a bar and winch for just under 2G. how much would decent lockers cost for front and back.

I voted for the winch, Only because I reckon a winch is one of the better things for a 4x4.
I've been in to many situations where a winch was needed.
Hence the reason I bought one =D.
But in the same token lockers are a huge improvement!

Air lockers engage with an air compressor and a switch. Auto lockers engage through some sort of spring mechanism i think when you engage 4wd.Middo wrote:excuse my ignorence but whats the difference between airlockers and auto lockers?

My opinion would be lockers. I found I used my winch more to pull others out than myself. As long as you wheel with someone else and carry some decent recovery gear I recon your right. The only other way I would go would maybe be one locker and a hand winch if money is tight. The hand winch will be hard work but at least you can drag yourself out backwards.

dualair lockers fitted etc will cost you close to 4k which might help you decide.

lockers will improve the ability of the car tenfold, but as others have said can just get you into even more trouble. Can't rely on mates winches all the time - they may not be able to get a cable to you from an appropriate angle and their winch may fail which can land you in even more trouble if you can't get tension off the cable.

I just fitted an auto locker to the front diff of my Hilux and love it. They definately cop a bad wrap and it is due to incorrect installation. I pulled my diff and took it to a specialist who set the backlash correctly, and it works really well. Put your foot down and it locks, take it off and it unlocks. Also I just fitted a tigerz11 winch and it works really well. The locker is the best mod I have made to my truck, but the winch gives me the confidence to use it.

sounds like a plan - the perfect plan, cause thats what i did .
if you arent in a rush you can get great gear reasonably priced but only if your not in a rush.
my truck has far more toys now because i didnt rush into buying the stuff. if i did rush in i wouldnt have had enough money to pay for what it has now.

You could probably do with some more suitable offroad tyres too, before you go throwing money around. If you hock off your current ones before the IFS starts chopping them up, you should get some reasonable money back from them to go towards new tyres.

Winch first then lockers. Maybe a good second hand winch, then get friendly with someone that can weld. With the moey left over buy a locker or have at least enough a good point to start saving for a locker.
