I have a warn m8000 winch and i am mainly using it to winch the front of the car down to the diff. As soon as i stop winching in, it slowly backs itself off as it is under load. There doesnt seem to be any locking mechanism.
Has anyone had this problem before.

Sounds like a problem with the brake assy inside the drum. I assume it is a low mount winch? Could be a range of things - oil and/or mud inside the drum and coating the brake cone, broken brake assy, worn friction surfaces. I would pull it apart and have a look - pretty simple assy. If there is anything wrong, it will be evident really easily. The guys at ARB overhauled my 8000lb lowmount as I had a worn seal which mud and crap into the brake and buggered it completely. I think the parts were about $150 and labour $75 - was a while ago.

this is a new one for me. If its a cone brake it should not make a difference. I understand the cable is normally wound onto the drum from the under side, but thought this was more for alignment with the fairlead.
So the brake on a low mount only works when you are pulling up a hill? - what happens if you need to winch backwards - is the vehicle un-controlled as such and the brake wlll not lock it up?
