What latch on spare wheel carrier?

I am nearly finished building my rear bar and spare wheel carrier, I was wondering what does everyone use to keep them latched on and also has anyone got an idea on how to latch the wheel back while the door is open so it won't hit me or the door if it is a little windy etc.

you could try a heavy duty over centre latch they spring closed once they get to a certain point so imho would be a good idea as they would stay shut

I like Destaco Latches, I think you can get them here (cant confirm because work blocked the site) . As for holding it open, the ones on opposite lock bars use heavy duty gas struts, which seem to work pretty effectively.

I run a bear claw latch, been on there for a couple of years now and I've just given it a squirt of inox every now and then to keep it working smooth.

Easily opened with one hand, double catch (same as a car door) and slam shut as well. I wouldn't use any other type.

to keep it open on mine i got a gas strut kit and put it on works like a dream the kit i got was a kaymar kit

Thanks everyone, I looked at using those latches similar to cars eg bearclaw, I actually came across Steve's thread on ausjeepers while googling. I just don't have the room in the bar (didn't design it with a latch in mind) to run a bearclaw.

The over centre latches are good but finding one any locally so I could compare or even look at how to mount it is impossible in this town

I just received from Hans Welding Works in Bundy (no affiliation) a latch that will do the job and will be easier to use than an over centre latch. It is pull open and you can just push it shut, it also comes with a striker plate. The pin has a diameter of 20mm. They had smaller ones but I am off to the Cape in a month and don't want my spare wheel opening on the corrugations.
