Hi,
I have just fitted an ENG-TEK digi pyrometer to my 80 series. Looks to me to be running pretty hot - opinions please!
Its a 1HD-T with beaudesert 3inch exhaust.
Injector pump rebuilt 125k ago prior to my ownership. Injectors done at same time.
I was told the pump was running standard settings and factory boost level.
Just did a short trip with the pyro with only a smallish load - 13ft tinnie, swags, engel, 3 ppl. - not a lot of gear really.
Running 305/70/16s.
Temps (EGT) as follows. therocouple is after the turbo in the dump pipe. Dump pipe internal diameter is 3.5inch. in degrees celcius.
Idle after running - 170
Flat road 100km/h 350 - 400.
5th gear slight hill - 450 - 500.
Highest reading was 530.
Without any gear at all, and accelerating from 60 - 100 in th gear It rised all the way to 520 before dropping back at about 90-95 and tapering down.
I havent run a boost guage yet, but seems like someone has played with the settings.
Does go bloody well though, but ive never driven another 1HD-T to compare.

That sounds about right. My FTE towing 1300kg, total of about 4500kg, reads similar to yours, but it is intercooled. Headwind, fully loaded and towing @ 110km/h sits on about 380-420deg C, in 40 deg C ambient temp

Re: Advice on EGT readings - 1HD-T
Similar to my 1HD-T which has been tuned and running 12psi.
Re: Advice on EGT readings - 1HD-T
Thanks,
So just to confirm slowhilux - is your FTE running standard fuel boost settings?
So similar reading on 1HD-T with 12psi would indicate that my fuel boost settings are NOT standard.
Are these temps ok?
I have set the alarm on pyro to come on at 550 and off at 500.
Thanks for the help.

Mine sits on 270 at 100kph. Towing a 1.5 tonne builders trailer the most it has ever reaches was 470 flat up a hill.
Stock as rock 1HDT with exhaust and dump pipe. 165 000k's on it. Not tuned blowing black smoke.

Re: Advice on EGT readings - 1HD-T
Thanks - thats what i thought. I reckon a stock 1HD-T would be much lower.
I am a bit worried that the settings will be too much for a big load - i.e. towing my big boat up Fraser island fully loaded.
Next step would be to check boost I guess.
In comparison, have just been up to fraser in a mates 1HZ turbo with top mount intercooler running 12psi and even with a heavy load we never saw 400 degrees. Highway it sat around 270.

Re: Advice on EGT readings - 1HD-T
test it with a bit of a load, 3rd or 4th gear up a decent hill. Hold it with wide open throttle for a hill climb starting from around 2000RPM at the bottom and push it through to redline before you reach the top. Watch the EGTs through out the climb.
Peak EGTs will be seen when the engine is under load, full throttle. Excess fuel creates more heat in the exhaust gases. test as above and you are giving it max fuel, but it is working to get enough air through it.
standard tune varies from one car to another.
It is regarded as more accurate and reliable to have the thermocouple in the manifold before the turbo
A boost gauge would be helpful also. More boost (within limits) with the same fuel settings should reduce the EGTs, more boost = more airflow, so lower A/F ratio, so less heat.
Your engine will see peak EGTs only a small percentage of the time, with an EGT gauge you can monitor this in circumstances like towing up a long hill, and drive according to the gauge.
Short bursts of high EGTs (ie passing on a hill) wont destroy the engine, prolonged running at high EGTs will (ie towing a boat in 4th up a long hill)
depending on your threshold for hip pocket pain, leave it tuned up, and enjoy the power, and drive it to the gauge when you are working it hard

Re: Advice on EGT readings - 1HD-T
Thanks.
V hard to test motor EGT at full load as I live in Cloncurry and there are no hills like what would be required.
In terms of how deep my hit pockets are - just deep enough to splash out on a $500 pyroguage - not deep enough to blow a $10k motor. My triple carbed EH is my play car. This one is meant to be the reliable tourer!
If I am able to get EGT down by increasing boost slightly is this a win/win? That is, will I get better power and lower EGT? What are the negatives of this?
Why would someone had run the fuel at this level and not matched the boost?
I'll order a boost guage and go from there.
Thanks for the help.
