4wd not engaging

Post by RAT »

I have a '92 vitara SWB and the front wheels are not turning.

I have switched the hubs to locked and changed the transfer stick to 4H and 4L. You can here it click into each transfer gear change but the front wheels still just sit there and don't spin.

What should I be looking into to fix this.

I also recently replaced the front pinion bearing into the diff and the front CV.

Does the front driveshaft (Transfer - Diff) spin?

When you had the diff out did you install the locking hubs correctly?

Ohh well sounds like your going to have to burn it and be rid of the hairdressers car and upgrade to a Sierra

G'day RAT, Did you sort this out yet? Mine's doing the same thing. I jacked it up with all wheels off the ground, put it into 4wd and saw the driveshafts were turning but not the wheels. Yes I had locked the hubs. Just checking before I pull things apart. Bob

Thanks for the offer. I jacked it up again today and removed the lhub covers. The spring on both sides had rusted itself solidly onto the spline. So when I turned the key from Free to Lock, it wasn't engaging because the spring stopped it. Couldn't believe my eyes; no grease just rust. Undid the complete unit, wire brushed everything and regreased them then reassembled the units. Now I need to test it out somewhere safe before I go bush just to make sure that was the problem. Hopefully I won't need the kind offer for CVs. Cheers Bob
