help ? v8 efi 304 issue in 4x4 (Mechanic)

Post by biggsy »

G'day,

If there are mechanic a engine gurus.

Have the 304 efi v8 in my GQ

had the 4B idling for a bit and it just stopped and will not start now.
The 4B has not been for a run for over a year due more mods. But do start the car regularly and let idle for quite awhile....

Been through all the basic fuel, fuses, earthing ect

I have the holden manual and going through it at the moment.....

1 thing that i have notice the manual says do a ohms test on the injectors. replace if under 15 or over 17 ohms

Im getting a reading of high 14.8. Does that means there dead on the way out or dirty and need a clean. and will this effect the car cranking but not turning over.
!2v to the coil and power to the injectors tested....
Really don't want to take the 4B to a mechanic just yet as I enjoy working on the truck and wanting to learn more..
Cheers Jason

I would start by draining the fuel and replacing the spark plugs. Fuel may of gone bad and now the plugs are fouled.

Have you tested for spark? If you have no spark I would suggest the ignition module might have an issue(alloy finned box) try wiggling the wiring plug as you are cranking it over

Also check for 12v at the ignition modules input.

When you switch the key to on does your fuel pup run briefly?

I'm not a mechanic by any means... But if it was my 304 i would check fuel is pumping into the rail (take off hose and put the hose into a jar and get someone to turn the key on) fuel should pour into jar. Then if it has petrol take out a spark plug and earth it then have someone start it to make sure it has spark.

These engines have a lot of electrics but with mine these two things have helped me locate no fuel pressure and a faulty ignition module. I know have a spare ignition module bolted under the dash so i can simply plug from one to the other to make sure its not the module.

If you have been working on it you might have knocked a wire off that is causing it not too fire, or batter not having enough charge.

Good luck!
