Strange question about GQ 5 speed

Post by 351ciofgrunt »

What does the back of a gq 5 speed look like once you've unbolted the transfer? Is there an output shaft poking out with an oil seal? Can a yoke be put on and the gearbox used in a 2wd application?

The output shaft sticks out about 40-50mm from memory and it has the oil seal in the housing. (The gearbox is fully sealed on the 4.2 models) The 2.8 / 3.0 gearbox is a different kettle of fish
The housing face is flat

I guess you could use these gearboxes in a 2wd application as they came out in Civillian Bus models, but not sure if the housings are different

Hey thanks that would be great, could you post a pic of what the back of the box looks like and if it's not too much trouble would you mind counting the splines on the output shaft? Thanks!

Thats a sweeet idea!

Might throw one in the TT!

I still hate th400s - old shite from the 60's and spending 10k on one makes me want to gag.
Gq box is strong as! and a dime a dozen!
Bit of a hijack but I wonder if the autos can be built strong?

cheers bru

I looked at putting a nissan auto behind my big block and a lot of guys down south have had success with them. I was going to use a valved up infiniti box i think the are called an " asia pacific" just has a different pump/spline. the biggest problem was getting a torque converter. everyone said yes we can build you 1, after 3 months of dramas i just shoved the manual in. still wish i was auto though. the asia pacific box is APPARENTLY the same across the board. you can use the shift selectors off the old patrol auto box and the front shaft/pump and fit them to a later electronic box. ;)

pics of box below. shaft has 30 splines ( the high spots on the shaft) just so i dont give you the wrong info.

these last 2 are the transfer case side. it is taped up as this box is outside at the moment. the shaft on this side has a hole in it to slide over the spline.
any more questions just ask. happy to help.
