Well as some of you know i am moving to Newman, WA in December. I need to buy a 4by before i leave, either new or second hand. So here is what i need...

I need it reasonably consumption friendly.
I need a towing capacity to cover a horse float or a car trailer with comp rig. that i may be building.
I need something comfortable and easy enough to drive up to Port headland or beyond on a weekend.

I will be only modding it slightly as i plan to build a play rig up there but would like it to be fairly capable.

I have my favourites but i wont let in on that yet.

I personally like the Nissan coil cab, capable enough, 4wd monthly review on it was good as well. A damm side more comfy than the rangie and a few more of the extras than the hilux, still you either get a toyo or nissan.... The landie has the better towing ability and is quite capable off road(not talking serious mods or buggys here) once you add a few little things.

I went the Landie for a few reasons and ideas...
a 300 Tdi (so second hand)
reliable, economic Tdi
best towing capacity
rear salisbury diff... which is similar to D60
and I reckon best offroad performer OFF THE FLOOR
and they are more comfortable than you think on long drives especially...
lots of aftermarket support

But, that is just me... ;)

patrol coil cab... the roads out there will mean coil = god send.
IMHO hilux is a rough ride, holdens are poor basic quality, and landy is not comfortable.

I voted patrol coil cab, but wouldn't say you were nuts if you went for the landie. In fact i'd probably just keep my eyes out for an exceptional deal on either, and grab whichever appeared first.

In fairness, this would have to be partly because there is no landcruiser up there on the list. I'd have thought that would also be a contender. A hilux is a match for a navara (if that), not for a patrol.

So the poll is sort of a pro-nissan set-up.

If you want it to be comfortable for long distance trips then get either the Defender or the Patrol. The others don't compare in terms of comfort.

Of that list the Defender (300Tdi) would be the most economical and has the highest towing capacity (depending on state regs).

Out of that list your not going to find anything that can tow and also handle the country where your headed better than either the Nissan coil Cab or the Defender.

The Defender will tow more and is more economical.
The seating comfort in the Nissan will out do the Defender.

I agree they are overpriced but I reckon they look pretty good. They have a real tough look. I like the dual cab ones better than the single cabs but the single cabs are heaps cheaper.

But yeah. In terms of bang for bucks the patrol is gonna beat the defender.

I have reviewed my financial situation and i will be spending between 30-40 ish dollars on a SECOND HAND VEHICLE.

With the defender, the are much more comfortable than most people think. Most complaints come from the seat which you either love / hate!

There are great aftermarket seats for the defender made by Aerotech, which have a removeable base, so you can keep the storage under the seat if need be for tools/battery...etc

It is a good all round vehicle...

The Defender is extremely comfortable for long trips (IMHO - I like the seats - some people think they are a bit narrow) and fuel consumption under 10L/100 is easily achievable.

The price is also great for one that is a few years old but still in good nick. If you want a lot of load capacity have a look at a Defender 130 Trayback. They have a 1.5 tonne payload capacity, and if you don't want to use it you can take the rear inner coils out and get good wheel travel. Also in states where towing capacity is limited by vehicle weight (QLD) you can tow a heap more than the other options.

If the buggy you build has a short wheelbase you may even be able to fit it on the tray of a 130???

I say the 7* series UTE :D spend abit of the left over dosh for a coil aframe rear end :armsup:


Go the defender :D 2" spring lift and some bigger rubber :cool: longer travel shocks and some new front seats :lol: make sure its a 110 thou :D

As for the land rover i dont want a very long vehicle and not really interested in a dual cab.

So i may have to go test drive some single cabs for comfort.

find out what car dealers are in town, then go with one of them. or what they use in the mines out that way, you can swap and shoofty parts with the mine dudes.

what is your budget?

The parts are pretty good up there for both toyota and nissan, not sure about land rover.

But since the company is moving my stuff for me, i am buying the vehicle in Brisbane. ;)

in regards to the price of the coil cab nissan, a mate of mine just picked up a 2002 coil cab with 63 000k for around $37000
