gearbox question - 253 in FJ40

Post by Mechman »

Hi guys
i have a 253 red motor in my FJ40. i didnt put it in myself and as i am not from australia i have no idea what it would have come from or where the 4 speed gerabox did. i am having some strange noises from the box and im thinking its a bearing, but as i dont know what is it is a bit hard to to know what to do.
can anyone tell me how i can find this out?.. is there a common car these motors came from? a number on it perhaps that will give me a clue?

also, is it worth reparing or just getting another gearbox to put in?

cheers.

it's probably the factoy toyota gearbox with an adaptor bellhousing mating it to the 253. while not exactly a dime a dozen the gearboxes are fairly cheap and plentiful especially if you just want to replace it with another 4 speed, should be able to pick one up from a wrecker for $500 give or take a bit - or put an ad in the wanted section of the bb, someone might have one they want to get rid of. There will be someone on this boartd who lives near you who can eyeball it for you.

looks like it could be the factory H41 4 speed, some of them came with the SAE style six bolt PTO port like that. some more photos like that from underneath but from different angles, including from fornt and rear, will give more clues.

what year is the truck? what does it say on the build plate next to "trans/axle"?

cheers
