Alpine 4x4 Challenge
Alpine 4x4 Challenge hots up!!@!! with half Price Entry.
Entries for this years Alpine 4x4 Challenge are bit light-on, so as a way to
entice all you competition four wheel drivers to try out these exciting
alpine stages we've created, we are offering half price entry.
Want to know what's on offer?
Long special stages in the alps - up to 8kms long - which could be in light
snow.
We are using a property which has never been used for competition before
The courses are tight with lots of trees and there's plenty of mud.
The emphasis is on skilled driving and not winching so there are only a
couple of stages which might require the co-driver getting out to winch.
Even if there is snow we will run a zero car through to mark the course.
Saturday we have a fun tight course winding your way through the alpine
snowgums. Another follows an open fenceline.
Sundays special stages includes SS6 which is roughly 4kms long and has a
boghole in the first quarter after an interesting hillclimb.
Entrants get special alpine 4x4 Challenge winch gloves, tshirts and beanies, support crews also get a gift pack.
There are plenty of prizes on offer including ARB, Procomp, Southern Cross, Leslie and Sons, Cheezy Racing, Brawn 4x4 and a heap of others.
We will also be doing a special draw each night giving away Alpine Challenge merchandise to lucky teams.
Scrutineering to check over vehicles is open up to 11pm on Friday so you
don't have to take the day off work on Friday. Competition starts Saturday
and goes through until Monday around 1pm when we will then have a
presentation early Monday afternoon so you can head off home if you wish on Monday afternoon.
Not also that we are upholding the moretoreum on the 4 point rollcages until the end of the year so 6 point is not compulsary until the 2005 Outback 4x4 Challenge.
We've put a heap of effort into setting up these courses on private property so to ensure that we have access to this unique property next year we need more entries.
If you don't have another car to team up with, let us know as we can help
match you up.
Give us a call on 03 9725 3806 or Paul 0418 345 635 and discuss your entry today.
We are committed to run this event so come along and win the first ever
Alpine 4x4 Challenge.
Spectators - only $10
Spectators can come along and see the 4wd action for only $10 per person for the weekend - that's cheap entertainment!
Saturday - we have three special stages next door to the Mount Hotham
Airport on Alpine Highway (B500), look for our sign. It's bitumen to the
turnoff and then 200 metres of easy 4wd track to the vantage point where you can watch the stages.
If you have a 2wd you can park on the highway and walk in.
Rug up it's pretty cold and bring your own lunch and drinks, or you can
shoot up to Dinner Plain (only 10kms away) for lunch and come back to watch more action.
We will have an undercover area set up so don't worry if the weather is a
bit wet.
Sunday - there are three special stages but the best viewing is at the
mudhold on SS6 which starts at 11am.
Access is strictly four wheel drive. Look for the Alpine A Frame once again
on the Alpine Highway (B500) a bit further down the road from Dinner Plain towards Omeo (22kms from Dinner Plain - signposted Victoria River Track). Same as Saturday bring your own refreshments etc.
There are more stages on Monday morning in this same location for those who are keen.

Was up there saturday, had a look at the last two stages, no winching. The second stage was really quick, up a fire break, the third was twisting in and out trees.
As far as placings, neil cooper was second untill he poped a tyre on the third stage, but take your pick the smithy/leen team or the birdy/shrek team
6 teams..... spectators...... total of 20, Its the first time it has been run, with the team from the OBC in charge the future looks good.
Top location, just need to see some foot deep snow to add to the challenge.
Will post some pics when they come back on.....

1990 FJ70, 1HZ turbo/inter, masterpiece in progress.
Smithy hit a tree when his front shock broke and jammed the steering, it was a big tree and fast, bent the bar backwards but they are still going.
Nash also hit a tree and pushed his bar back about an inch
The Brawn car has seen better days after he love tapped numerous trees, broke a cv and bent something in the front.
Cooper had a bad run he rolled a tire off the bead, hit a tree with the front guard, bent a rim, then very slowly placed the car on its side in the creek and had bloody cold water flowing over him in the car. Then snapped the plasma rope on a rock.
On the one stage Sandy broke a tie rod, a cv, burnt out the winch motor in his teammates truck, and rolled a tire off the bead-they dnf'd that stage.
Shrek hit another big tree hard but the bar held up a bit better. It was on the opposite side to ateco
This is all i can remember at the moment
It was an awesome event, pity i had to come home sunday night so i don't know results and i missed out on the final day. I will definately be back next year. Thanks to all the Marshall's and Paul and Sharon for putting it on and thanks to the teams for being there.

We ended up with 5 hours of hardcore tree slapping footage. Seriously I have never seen so many trees punished in any event.
Andrew and Birdy absolutely hammered but it made for some great filming when the green machine turned into a pinball off the trees and tried to tackle the dirt wall sideways after the bog.
The event will go to air in one of our later episodes and DVDs will also be available.

Alpine Challenge Conquered
That was hard work and one of the best events we have ever been in. Drivers normally get warm in a good event and even in these low temps all the drivers came in dripping with sweat. Tight corners and muddy bog holes caught all of us out at times.
The rocky jump ups and steep banks meant that we were winching quite a bit, except for Birdy and Shrek who could drive many obstacles.
The Blue team loved the mud and excelled in it with great runs along boggy creek beds. The Bue Rangie made the best air on SS3, sailed through the air like a bird, and gently kissed the earth approaching the finish box.
Navis had a cruisy but scary ride until the last day and then they waded in creeks of melting snow, scrambled up steep banks and ploughed waist deep in bogs.
Lots of dings, but Smithy's Blue Rangie and Trents Blue Hotrod survived the mechanical stresses. Two car teams meant that we had to be right behind the other to finish close together. As well as tight tree lined tracks that made picking a driving line very demanding Trent would dump a load of soot that obliterated any visibility.
Team aspect fantastic, great teamwork and very sociable. It takes a matched pair to do well and there was a lot of that developing over the three days.
Support crew unbelievable, repairing ripped out brake lines, bent bull bars, coolant top-ups and offering hot soup, coffee and BBQ lunch.
Roger was determined having to reset the pressure relief valve in his oil pump before every stage, they became quite quick at it after half doz goes.
Chris and Coops had some bad luck with a split tyre and a spare that refused to get off it's mounting...too cold for it! Then blowing a transfer case on SS8, falling over on SS6, ever so gently. But they were the first to finish SS6 and Ben was the only car to drive the exit from the creek. Sandy and Peter had absolute carnage on SS6. When Sandy high centred in the creek bed he called for a "tap-tap", once, twice and he was off. The "swimming pool" was really a bottomless bog and Sandy's team ended up bogged in black ooze to the top of the bonnet that over stressed their winches.
Marshals were great, minimal penalties and absolute fairness.

Top weekend, a real drivers course. One of the best social events in years, we drove hard during the day and had a ball at night, hangovers for some making the next day a bit tougher. Stages had a great variety with tight and fast areas. Great accomodation at Dinner plain, and reasonably priced especially with 12-15 people in one house. Hopefully there will be a huge turn out next year.
