i bought a new 9000lb warn last year and it shat itself last month in warrenty. i get a call from warn. they will not cover any damage under warrenty as it has been in water. this is bullshit for 4wd winch to not be allowed under water. they said sorry and when ii asked if it could be fixed by someone else they said sure but the parts quoted were close to 2 grand. they said that if i bought another one from them it would be 1600 and their new water resistant one.
( i guess if it rains)
i called brawn. got a great lady on the phone. they are going to set me up with a more powerful and faster winch with plasma rope for less than warns offer.
warn is riding on their name and is going to have a hard fall oneday.
i'll let you know how the brawn goes

Had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago
Warn 9000lb low mount got some water in it and ceased the motor and corroded the gears which looked shitty and cheap anyway It was less than a year old - No warranty these things dont like water
I got a warn hi mount 8000 with the motor up higher and a better gearbox design and no issues after 2yrs
Thats now been sold to a happy new purchaser
The old 9000 low mount was a bin job That was one dear learning experience
Warn 9000lb low mount got some water in it and ceased the motor and corroded the gears which looked shitty and cheap anyway It was less than a year old - No warranty these things dont like water

A manufacturer wont warrant anything against water damage. If you dump your new fourby into a river & it sucks water into the diffs then they wont cover it for water damage. If this happens then the oil should be changed immediately not a week or two after the fact.
Check the warranty booklet it will more than likely say it is not built for use under water.
If it was my winch I would have had it serviced immediately after a drowning to reduce the likelyhood of damage.
Most warranties are limited & only cover failures due to poor workmanship.

I have a 9000lb warn and it gets submerged all the time. ive used it under mud and water as well. If you give them a run to dry out the water(as reccomended by the manufacturer) and service the gearbox( instead of leaving it full of water). They will last for years.

Brawn gives a two year guarantee on their waterproof winches. I have had mine for over two years and it is the first winch I haven't had to regularly rebuild.
Brawn gets a stack of customers who sell their warns second hand and for a few hundred bucks, trade up to a brand new water proof job.

not always true, my old man sucked water into his transmission and diffs on his patrol about 6months after he brought and took it back to nissan and said fixed it and they did no questions asked

Not neccesarily, there is usually a clause in the warranty booklet covering them for vehicle abuse & while the vehicle may be a 4WD, dumping it the dirtiest mudhole and bogging it to the shithouse may be considered outside the realms of its "intended use".
It would also depend on their definition of fording. They may only warrant the vehicle until it gets stuck ( bow wave effect ).

You just have to be careful in regard to the actual pulling power of the winch. The Brawn 9500 has up to 30% less pulling power than the Warn 9500 and the Brawn is slower. The Warn with 3 layers on the drum will still pull 7,920 lb while the Brawn will only pull 6,500, with 4 layers the Brawn will only pull 5700 lb while the Warn will pull 7400. At 6,000 lb and 9,500lb the Brawn is abour 20% slower.

I had a warn 10000 Lb winch on my 4by for 15 years ,crossed a hundred rivers including the brackish Jardine at the top end.Then it was serviced by ARB at the new Dandenong branch for$ 250-00.It was ready for another 15 years Work.It is important to run out the cable after every trip and rewind it on the drum while pulling the vehicle.This heats the motor and dries out he water.Then again maybe I was lucky.Regards P.K.
As I said before, in any test conducted by 4wd TV, Brawn and 4x4 Australia magazine the Brawn has continuously pulled to 12,500-13,000lbs whilst no Warn has ever reached it's rated capacity. This is because of the rating system...as stated by Warn tech staff in the US...pulling a load up a ramp, if it can pull it for 2 metres before stalling - it is called that rating, and that is in a lab with max voltage, amps, etc.
The Brawns are rated on a dead pull and 9,500 is a safe working CONTINUOUS load...it will pull that all day...not just for 2 metres.
Furthermore in the 4x4 Australia endurance test (half load for 4 minutes)...the Brawn motor was warm but touchable, the others were too hot to touch but still pulled efficiently BUT the Warn was smoking so badly after 2 minutes that it had to be switched off.
YES the Brawn is slower but it will pull harder, longer and more efficiently...even at no load it is drawing 10 amps less than a Warn.
PLUS the Brawn is guaranteed waterproof whereas all of the Warns (except the new water proof one...How much $$$$) is guaranteed to not work under water (infact the Warn brochures have only changed recently as in removing the red comments on every third or fourth page - "do not submerge these winches". Which obviously voids their warranty...the purpose of this thread!).
