breaks problem on lux

Post by batcho101 »

i own an 84 model s/c lux and my breaks are playing up.when i first put my foot down i have normal pedal feel but as i keep pressure there my foot almost goes to the floor.
has anyoen had this problem?
i was thinking it could be the master cylinder?
there doesnt seem to be any leaks anywhere in the break system
any help appreciated

if its not leaking sounds like the master cylinder is by passing itself

what do u mean by "by-passing itself"?
woudl it have a leak in the cylinder which creates pressure so that as u first put your foot down there isnt engouh space for most of the fluid to escape btu when u hold it it slowly leaks itself out?

it means the fluid is passing one of the seals inside the master under pressure. if you undo the master off the booster you will probably find fluid leaking out from behind. Let too long besides the fact one day you will hit a hard immoveable object it will probably leak into the booster and trash it too. You have a couple of options.
1. Rebuild master cylinder but you can only do if you have someone who knows what they are doing available and if the bore is not scored.
2. If you bore is scored have it bored out and stainless sleeves fitted. Advantage is will never score bore again. Disadvantage is its rather expensive.
3. Buy a new master cylinder and swap it over.
All in all its probably cheaper and easier to fit a replacement master cylinder

master cyclinder kits for lux's are about $85 from parts palaces, pretty simple to install them just remember how they came apart
