Talkin engines and stuff...... How fast do they go???

Post by Grantw »

How fast are these spooks that you guys have. Obviously the highway is the easiest way to get to a lot of these 4x4 places nowadays so what is the quickest you have had your zook? I have a 1600efi with rockhopper and had 161km/h on GPS a few weeks ago. That was with 31' claws on a slight down hill run. It was reving at 5900rpm. Mind you I need the three lanes to keep it on the road...

my sleepy 1300 on 34's with a rockhopper 3 will occaisionally sit on about 75 on the speedo which i calculate to be close to 100... but i have very little interest in going any faster than that... i don't think the little car would be much interested in turning or stopping from any faster than that either.

note: it's not a daily driver so i'm not real fussed about performance on road

I've had mine cruising at just over 140km/h. This was back when I was using it as a daily driver with the vit eng and 32" BFG's. I was just keeping up with the traffic. On the highway, in certain 110km/h zones, people figure if they're going to do more than 125km/h, then they may as well do 139km/h as its the same penalty (15-30km/h over). The BFG's run much more predictably than the swampers. I wouldn't want to go much over 120km/h on the swampers.

161km/h is FAST!!!!!!! in a sierra. I guess you were just checking that you're tyres were balanced

Matt.

its a tuff situation for me as I use the car for a daily driver as well as offraoder. So I guess I like the speeding around the streets as well as keeping up with the hoons at the lights. However I still want the offroadibility so I was curious to see if anyone has a "quick" spook. I was in the process adding a T25 turbo and intercooler to the spook but cost got a little excessive..... Spook at 180km/h, one day and I will prove it.

I almost bought a lwb zuk about 8 years ago with a twin turbo supra engine in it. nice conversion but waay scary. We had it upto 140 in 3rd gear on the maroondah hwy. he said he had it upto 200 which I sorta believe as the engine was capable of doing it and he was crazy enough to try it. he used to tow a 22' boat behind it.

Grimbo, do you know if the boat trailer had brakes on it??

I can just imagine this sierra trying to stop quickly with that huge boat behind it!!! JACK KNIFE!!!

To fit the supra engine in (I guess you mean a 7M straight six), Was the nose extended or did the transmission tunnel expand and become a bit of an engine tunnel??

Matt.

sorry not a supra a celica my oops. He had discs front and rear and I'd hope he had brakes for the trailer although just for the thrill it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't

I can get over 160 kph (where the speedo runs out) out of my Vitara 1600 carby - I did that fully loaded to the roof on my trip up from Melbourne to Brisbane. I even have footage of me throwin up rooster tails showing 160kph on the speedo with no forward motion. Considering that has the 30 inch muddies oin it the wheel speed was in excess of 180kph.

Of course there was no wind resistance......

Speed is irrelevant on a 4wd. the question you should be asking is how slow can we idle along at in 4wd Low.... and you'd all kill me on that score.

Dammit - why don't rockhoppers grow on trees?

My suzi has done over 160k's in high range 4wd in the dirt during a rally we did in the Beerburum Forestry with the BSSC. Mind you she did start to get a bit twitchy & being the big girl I am I made Chad back off a bit.

my 1300 stock gears, 32" bfgs (when I had them), could sit on 140km/h in 5th.

with the rockhopper in 5th it would pull past that.

no with stock tyres, stock xfer, in excess of 150. but it feels like it about to take off and fall apart.

supercharged with TBI it should go a little harder.

mind you anymore than 140 in a spook is asking for trouble.

We did this in my sierra when it had it's wheels off and was on axel stands...

Put it in 5th, reved it up to the max then dropped the clutch and the speedo needle whipped straight over and off the clock within half a second... geez it was loud though... oh and the sneeze at the end of it was madness
