Power Steering conversion

I am going to change my power steering pump at some stage while the engines out due to it being mega crap!!
I was considering putting something other then land rover in it like one out of a Jap truck or something.
a) Am I wasting my time?
b) Would there be any real benefit from it?

I have replaced everything in my steering setup over the last 18 months and my steering is still very heavy so I have come to the conclusion that it has to be the pump. When the power steering oil is cold the steering is fantastic!! Once everything gets hots it all turns to crap!! Feels like I have no power steering at after a hard day in the bush!!

i dont know about the rovers - what sort of cooler if any do they run on the power steering :?:

Fit a Sagnaw pump from a commodore or falcon thios should improve it.

Go with the saginaw pump.
Works really well.

cool i have had a look at these in the past :)

only problem that i can foresee is will it fit where to original one is??

Do you have a part number for the saginaw pump that you used?

No part number but the one I used is from VS v8 Com.

Holden wrecker on Hamond Rd Dandy.

A couple of blokes in the club gave me this idea and will be following it through when my PS pump dies.

Go to the wreckers and pick up a cheap PS pump of eiter a Commodore or Falcon, well anything that's suitable replacement and get a few new fittings, change the bracket and off you go, much cheaper than a Rover PS pump (abot $630 plus GST my old man paid for his).

did you put a late model steering box and didn,t put a restrictor in the line I know some one who did that I gave him a rebuild pump it was still crap very heavy Then he was told to run a restrictor now the steering is good :roll:

mine is a late model rangie and the power stearing box has been replaced twice (damn trees)
Had a look the other night and there dosn't seem that much room for a different model pump unless it's put in a stupid spot like the passanger seat :roll:

from what i have heard f you get a pump for a statsman it has some jkind ov variable valve, which helps lighten the steering at low revs.

This is only from what i have been told. Maybe have a talk with an expert about this.
