I don't really see the point, sure the diff centre is a bit lighter and more compact than a standard unimog diff, and in the US parts are commonly available, but it isn't like anyone ever breaks the centres on mog diffs, I have only ever heard of the portal boxes breaking.

OK, that is probably the major reason to build the hybrid diffs, but I have seen plenty of 100" or so WB rigs running mog centres.

A hilux centre with mog (or aftermarket) portals would be pretty good though (and nice and light).

This is only because people were originally scared of modifying the Mog Housings. I think you will find it will become the Norm to do it this way in the future. Prob with the Hilux Centres is the gearing is not available for them. Closest you can get is a 3.7. The Mog 404 runs a 3.54 i beleive.

Theres a mob i nthe States doing a bolt on solution as a drop down, will have to try and find it, but basically turns a standard diff into a portal. looks pretty good too.

for some it may be more practical as you can get much higher gears for the 9inch. So if your only running a 37 or so it may be more practical as far as on road RPMs go ..

the one shorty40 posted is awesome because it uses 416 portals. the best thing 404's have going for them is that they are cheap, the portals are not unbreakable by a long shot. if you are going to throw major coin at a hybrid axle, you would be silly to use 404's IMO.

A while back I called Wolfgang from killeraxles.com who sells unimog axles in Germany (mostly to the US). All the old axles (pre UXXXX series) were 600-1000euro, depending on which model you want, then comes shipping to OZ. You can pick up a complete running 404 on ebay here for about 200euro. Other models weren't as common so cost more, but the army had thousands of 404's.
