HiLux steering problem

Post by revin »

Its my car  95 2.8Diesel LN106 Model.

After having mechanic problems i`ve decided that im not wasting my money again and am doing this myself :? .

I`ve had what i thought was excess play in my steering for a while ,took it to my local mechanic who said i needed to renew my drag link internals (which i paid him to do) now its been about 2 months and the excessive play has come back again,so while i replacing my glow plugs thought i`d stick my head around and have a look.Well i soon found the problem,i`ll try to explain it as best i can and if anyone can help with advice that would be great.

It appears that where the draglink and steering arm meet ,the ball joint type of thing seems to be cracked thru(in the photo im talking about where it loops around the back of the shockie) it also appears the have a bead of weld around the top,its this normal or from a previous repair you think.
So what im wondering is could i just re weld over the crack or should i try to find a second hand steering arm ????
Also any hints on how to do it ,by the looks it wont be too hard so im willing to give it ago   .

Anyone in Newcastle got 1 they want to sell.

Cheers
Mick

as bogan said, dont waste your time fixing the std setup. Go to a x/over setup.

I have pretty much the same problem as you, with the play in my steering, but my J arm is not cracked. I am not going to bother sourcing the problem, as I will be getting hi steer in the next few weeks

yeah and while you are there put some rear springs up front and shock hoops and, and, and............

if you can't afford to throw a couple of grand $$$ at your rig buy a recond j arm from All 4X4 spares on McDougall street Kotara.

this will fix your problem for now [cheaply] but you will still have steering limitations with a push pull set up.

I cant help but agree with everyone else.

If you cant afford to go x-over/high steer you can just put another arm in, but it will end up bent or cracked again.

Standard hilux steering is great, until you modify the suspension. Then its inadaquate.

I`ll give all 4x4 a call on Monday hopefully they`ll have 1 there if not i`ll PM spazbot to work a deal out.

I dont have the money to do X over/hi steer plus dont really think i need it as my Hi lux is pretty stock and im not do much off roading as i`d like to now. I basically use my ute for towing my road bike to the track .

Thanks for the help so far
