if its from an out put shaft its more that likely the bearing is gone

If its coming from the around the output shaft its more likely to be the output seal, not the bearing.

the seal would have gone because the bearing has gone and is letting the shaft flop around.

a possibility. more often than not mud/dirt gets into the seal which causes it too leak, there is also the possibility that the seal is old and begining to perish. Personally i wouldn't be jumping to the conclusion that the bearings need replacing without looking at the simple things first. Then again diagnosis without viewing is not easy. After all when you do a rear main seal how often do you strip the motor to replace the crankshaft bearings?
