No guts no glory

Post by bushytas »

Hi, all I have 2LT Toyota surf not long had the turbo rebuilt and the pump rebuilt due to being worn out.
Nevertheless, my problem is I do not seem to have any power.
I have checked the compression changed all the filters checked the pump timing its just dam slow and on hills you have to rev and ride the clutch to get going otherwise it stalls same in high range 4wd when in mud.
Any ideas on why
My friend has a non-turbo 2.4 and that would over take me?
I cannot work it out
Hope someone has ideas
Cheers Brendon

you need to fit up a boost gauge and an EGT gauge, then tune the settings on the fuel pump for optimum power with acceptable exhaust temperatures. if the pump has been calibrated on the lean side, it will take a fair bit of adjustment to get it to make good power. almost make sure the boost compensator line is attached (from manifold to top of fuel pump). Tune it for about 600 - 650 C post turbo, and about 9psi boost. it will go surprisingly hard with that setup. If you add an intercooler 11 - 12psi is fairly safe.

if any or all of that is beyond your skills and toolkit, it would be a good idea to take it back to the shop where you had the pump rebuilt and tell them you'r enot ahppy with the power.

When you say adjustment do you mean the mixture screw i.e. enrichment
Alternatively, the top screw for the bellows to enable more fuel to flow under boost ???
Also I was wondering about the temp your saying 600 to 650c where do I take that temp from ??? Eg from the turbo housing or from the rear of the car ?? And is the temp reading under load or at idle ??
I have had a boost gauge on the 4wd just after having the pump rebuilt it was showing a steady 7-8 psi but unsure what the actuator has been set to when I got the turbo rebuilt I believe he set it for 10psi but unsure.

Temp reading is taken from within the turbo housing with a pyrometer. And that temp should only be achieved at full load.
