Ratio for 33" on a 83 RR

Post by Jay »

Has anyone ran 33" on a RR 83 LT 95(4 speed) Carburator?
Is a 4.11 R&P needed to re-adjust ratios

Thanks

To maintain standard gearing, assuming the 3.54/29" tyres, then 4.11's go with 33's.

What will give the rangie a better rugged look and off-road performance all around(rocks, snow and light mud) 33"x11.5 JT II or 33x12.5 TRXUS or 33x12.5 BFG....
Will the 3.5 Carby with a 4.11 provide enough troque to spin the 33"s

Don't want to cut much from body

and 34" swampers are not avaiable now in Lebanon

what do you think is the best all around perfomer (TRXUS/ JT II or BFG Mud)

I kind of like the Simex JT II this will be my third set of Simex but first of JT II since i owned 32" and now 36" ET 's

Jay,

I think you'll find that you will be returned close to standard gearing with a 33/34 inch tyre and 4.11's.

I did not loose much power with the current 32 and LT 95 ratio....
I think with a 33 and a 4.11 I could gain a bit more of crawl

Thanks mate,

Tyres are 32x11.5x15's
Standard axles
Carby 3.5 & 4 speed.

Its not running at the moment so strength is not an issue.
Before it hits the road, or at least OFF road i'll hopefully have a rear maxi (and maybe front maxi and 4.11s, depends on what kind of deal i can get!!) I want to ditch the 3.5 for an inj 3.9 soon too.

You have the LT 95 gearbox....How is the crawl ratio with the 32" has it lost much power what type of tyre are you running?

Haven't driven it with the 32s as its not running yet, i'd imagine the crawl ratio to be pretty screwed. Hopefully i can get some 4.11s in before it hits the road.
Its not running at the moment so cant compare to standard size tyres.

Tyres are BFG Mud Terrains.

Rangie Spares flares with the gaurds cut heaps, its got 2" Body and 2" suspension lift. Should fit 35s no worries.

Just try it and see.

If you feel you need to change to 4.1s then do it.

I have 36's and a Carb 3.5, 4speed and 3.54s
It could be lower, but I still do everything I have to, just a bit more right pedal and not backing off as much
It still drives around town alright, but its not built for that so I dont worry about it.

How do you go on steep downhill sections, doesn't it try to run away from you too much??

Yeh but thats half the fun...
Its not too bad actually, just brake a bit, select a low gear, let the engine rev with keep compression.

Its bearable.

That truck will certainly never can crawl over obstacle...also you won't be able to drive it uphills on regualr road as you will downshifting and edn up in first gear no? Is it the early rangie LT 95 Any pics?
PS I250

You might need a 3" suspension lift with the flares and 2" body lift to fit in the 35" easily remember your truck will flex off road

I'll see how i go, the gaurds are cut up as high as they can go so i think they'll be ok, if not i'll look into it further and might go up on the suspension lift.

I have found that even in a manual that you still use the brakes. My 83 Rangie (used to have the same gearbox but taller hi-ratio) even in low first I had to brake on downhill and I am running same diamiter as you are (32's just in 16 inch rims).

In the ZF auto now fitted, funnily enough I am more comfortable in downhills as I can use the trans handbrake and feather the foot brake to maintain control.

But everyone drives diffrent.

The risk of wheel lock-up while braking on steep decents can be reduced if you use cadence braking.

Too low a gear can also lock-up wheels on steep slippery decents.

Yes but if that happens all you need to do is hit the accelerator.

I have also clicked the handbrake on 1 or 2 clicks. Increased wear rate, but I can live with that :)
