The missus is pestering me aobut getting her a MU as her next car, and i've been looking at either the 2.8 or 3l diesels. Just a few Questions for your brains trust...
Whats sort of Reliabilty/Parts Issues are there? Are they mainly rodeo parts or are there a few Japan only bits 'n' peices?
(panels/etc.)
What sort of Towing Capacity do they have?
Any reoccuring Frequent problems to look out for when purchasing a MU, and what sort of price range (obviously extremely general) should i be looking at...
I'm not worried about blown engines/panle damage etc, I'm a mechanic and dont mind a project (i've got three others already )
Thanks,
Ben

parts in general are really hard to find or so ive found. if you do find them.. they are pretty expensive.
panels are NOT interchangeable between rodeos or fronteras unfortunately :( well maybe the grill/headlights...
main seal usually goes around the 140k mark... and alternators cost about $1000 to replace! timing belt goes at on or close to 100k
check out www.carsurvey.org there's bit of stuff on there. or check out clubisuzu.com quite a bit of stuff on there
when i was looking for one 2 weeks ago they were priced from 8k-13k depends on the condition!

Best place to look at and read from is the isuzu club.
Basically mechanicals and suspension are rodeo or Jackaroo pending on which engine you get (2.8 rodeo and 3.1 Jackaroo). Panels are a bit harder so I would try not to hurt them, if you do then you'll have to find a MU at the wreckers, this can be tough!
Usually people are unfamiliar with the MU as It is an import therefore they don't to try to fix them, say its too hard to fix or try to rip you off and source stuff overseas.
Just tell them its for a MU and ask for rodeo/Jackaroo parts and that will help ALOT.
Towing I am not too sure but its on the club site.

There is heaps of support for parts and other questions for the MU on that web site. Trust me it has saved me $1000s by asking question in the forum for my MU.
Cheers

1994 3.1L turbo Diesel Isuzu MU.
Panels are interchangable with rodeo and frontera, the front end is the same under the skin, the hardest thing to get is the guards (which are the same as the frontera except the blinker is in a different spot) because all the ricers have bought them for there mini trucks, so now holden have none and to get them at the wreckers is near impossiable.MissMU wrote:parts in general are really hard to find or so ive found. if you do find them.. they are pretty expensive.

Rear main seals will leak if the pvc valve blocks up.
Alternator is the same as rodeo, new they cost about $400, and can be repaired for about half that.
Timing belts are easy to get and not to hard to replace.
With towing you can fit the Jackaroo towbar, the MU weighs around 1800kg so towing would be very similar as the jack is about 1900kg.
As everyone has said info is at http://www.clubisuzu.com
Go hard or go home!!!
