well i finally got aroud to shaving my spare front diff.
a little scary at first, this was my first shave
i only had limited tools, a nine inch grinder and a welder. and these were loners.
probably could have gained a little more clearance, if i had taken more time and risked the chance of leaks.
the first thing is to cut a hole, so measurements can be taken for the crown wheel.
side on
i then tac welded the plate on. then bolted up a diff head to help hold the mating surface flat, as i try'd to weld.
as you can see it's now a little flatter and smoother
in the end i only gained about an inch of ground clearance. but now there is no big drain bung hanging down, trying to hold on to every edge and ledge.
i'm stoked

killer
just take out the bottom two bolts which hold the third in. you can see in the pics the bolt goes through to the inside. will take longer, and won't always empty out clean, and may leave bits of metal filings, sludge and so on in the diff. unless you just take the whole 3rd out.nicbeer wrote:How do you empty the diff now?

its set up so you use the bottom two bolts,
a real slow way to empty the diff. but this is how i've had to do the diff since it was serviced. i reckon that they were having strong man comps when they tightened up the drain bung. shiiiiiiiiiiit it's tight.
even with a three foot bar i cant make it budge.

nice u'll love it now
most of the advantages comes from the flat bottom on the diff now
they pretty much slide over everything instead of hanging on the drain plug
how much clearance do u have to the bottom of the pumkin and what size tires?
