2.5TDI or 2.8TDI, what do I have?

Post by psycronic »

I have a oct/91 built NH pajero GLS but am not sure if I have a 2.5 or 2.8 diesel.

I haven't had a chance to find the engine number to confirm what it is (not sure where to find them), but after looking in the haynes 83 - 96 manual and from the pics I'm thinking I may have a 2.8 fitted.

On the rocker cover it has a sticker stating a 94 build date, also the dipstick is located on the passenger side, (not drivers side like the manual shows). Also the engine bay almost completely matches the picture for the 2.8 engine bay.

Where can I find the engine numbers for both engines, and is there an easy way to work out which one i have?

cheers

not sure where engine no. is, but if it matches the pics in the manual(the engines do look very different) it probably is a 2.8.
the main difference i can see in the pics is the difference in the rocker cover and front pulley cover.
looks like you may have scored yourself the later motor. i think they did use them from about 95 on, so a 94 build date matches ?

The obvious differance is the 2.5 has a plastic cover over the timing belt where the 2.8 has an alloy cover over a chain

plus if its a factory 2.8, you will also have a factory 30mm body lift

Check out the compliance plate under the bonnet or on the firewall.
4M40 = 2.8
4D56 = 2.5

The pics in the haynes manual made it confusing.
