Installing a Pyro on 2LT? how?

G'day, have done a search without any luck,

How have people installed a Pyro on the factory turbo setup? is there a simple place to bolt one into the manifold or do i need to have something fabbed up to bolt into?

Reading previous posts preturbo seems to be the optimum place, but that is heavily debated so before or after is fine just how have people done it?

Mine is the factory surf setup but is bolted to a 2.8 hilux motor not that that should make much difference.

looking at doing some tuning and sounds like a pyro is the first step.

Do i just order a pyro through repco or is there a specific fitting/type that is required, they are pricey buggers so I want to make sure i get the right one.

I have just installed an Denco turbo to my HJ60...and the fitting for the pyro is on the dump pipe.

If there isnt a spot already allocated to take a pyro...maybe drilling and tapping a thread maybe an option (just a thought - please tell me if I am wrong). Most aftermarket gauges come with there own fittings though, so you would have to get the right thread die.

i just made up a piece of round bar with a thread the same as the one on the probe and just drilled a whole in the dump pipe as close to the turbo as i could and just welded the fitting in, then screwed the probe into the dump pipe.

When putting your Pyro in pre-turbo, make sure you remove all the swarf or say bye-bye turbo :cry:

i've got a surf with I assume the same gear as you. When I installed my pyro the egr pipe ummm fell off and I made a plate that covered the egr hole in the exhaust manifold. Drilled and tapped the same plate for the pyro probe and all is good.

There's not alot of room at your dump pipe, you might have to drill through the fire wall :D . V8 that puppy

Seeing what the engine is doing. I think the temperature can help show whether the engine is over or under fuelling. Or working too hard ie: going up a hill hauling a trailer. Not 100% but I think it's something like that. Has been discussed previously I think.

Yeah ok, thats pretty easy to understand. However what benefit is it? ....apart from just knowing the exhaust gas temperature. I have a boost gauge on my 2Lt but that does not tell me crap.

Whats the difference in going pre or post turbo with the pyro? Do you get a different reading?

There is a big difference in pre and post turbo temps. The best spot is befor ethe turbo, but to do it properly and not let swarf in its best to remove the turbo.

Thats why they are fitted in the dump pipe.

Make sure that pyro temp don´t definatelly go over 900 celsius or you can se BYE BYE to turbo AND engine.(or pistons)
I wouldn´t let it go over 850 celsius, but first I should install pyrometer before saying anything :roll:
It has layed at carage for months :lol:
