To spend or not to spend.....that is the question......
Hi all, Just had the oil/filters changed in my '89 GQ Patrol today and the mob that did it reckon they've found some things that need attention. Apparently I'm looking at a fair amount of expense, but I'm wondering if I'm flogging a dead horse. It's got 419,000kms on it (NA TD42) and they reckon the ...

Oil leaking from A/C compressor??
Greetings, I've just noticed what appears to be some sort of oil leaking from the back and bottom of the A/C compressor on my GQ Patrol. The droplet coming off the bottom looks like oil, but the stuff that's on the ground is very dark (virtually black) and quite sticky. I'm assuming this is bad news ...

Fkng fuel tank leak. ()&$#(%^#(&^$#
When the clutch slave cylinder died on my GQ Patrol on the weekend, I had to get RACQ to come and tow it home. They pulled it backwards up onto the tilt tray, using the towbar. Now, my fkng fuel tank is leaking. It's enough to form a small puddle (perhaps twice the size of a 50c piece) under the ...

Well, I put the replacement in this afternoon. My god....the amount of crap that came out of the line was ridiculous.....looked like very fine black powder all in the bottom of the bottle after I finished flushing/bleeding it. So, here's hoping that with a nice clean system full of DOT3, it lasts ...

Re: tappets
They've not been done since I've had it, but the previous owner claimed they'd been done shortly before I ended up with it. I've gotta put it in to get a gasket replaced shortly, so it might be a good chance to get them looked at at the same time.mav wrote:when was the last time you checked the tappets???

Hmmm.....couldn't get a genuine one today, but Repco had one, so I got it instead. The guy there told me something interesting though. While he was ringing the stuff up on the computer, I pulled the cylinder out of the box and had a look at it. Stamped on the bag is a warning that says "Use DOT3 ...

The 20/60 may be ok in the heat of summer. Are temps not cooling in Ozz now? I use 15/40 but if we`re having a cold winter (minus 10s) I change to 10/40 for that 3 months. I mean 20/60 is thicker than what they use in 25yr old Rovers Just my two cents Alex Yeah, we're heading towards colder weather ...

It's a TD42. The master cylinder was replaced shortly after I replaced the slave cylinder. I was originally going to put a kit in the master, but when I pulled it down, it was pretty much buggered, so I got a local mechanic to put a new one on for me. He apparently flushed the whole thing at that ...

Clutch slave cylinder died again!?!?
Greetings, Today, while pulling into the servo, the clutch slave cylinder on my GQ patrol died again. Fluid pissing out of the rubber seal around the little pushrod that comes out the end of it. I've pulled it out and it's totally buggered.....the bore is rough and there's a large amount of 'shite ...

Loud tappet noise when cold after oil change?
Greetings, Owing to the fact that I was unable to get my regular brand/type of oil here (Penzoil Long Life Diesel), I changed to a different brand (Penrite HPR Diesel) for my most recent change in my GQ Patrol (TD42 non turbo). Now, I'm getting rather loud tappet noise when it's cold, which I never ...

I just found this thread and, having delusions of suddenly finding masses of hitherto unknown power, went to have a look on my TD42. Alas, the previous owner has removed the filter and spring :bad-words: I don't know why I'm surprised really.....I've found so many other 'questionable' mods on it ...

Exhaust jacks, maxtrax and roof-top campers!
Hey all, Looking at a few bits and pieces before I do a trip to the N end of Fraser (through the Ngkala Rocks bypass bit) and I'd thought I'd ask around here for some opinions on the following items. Bushranger X Jack exhaust jack. Any good? Waste of time? Maxtrax recovery ramps. Do they work as ...

Ah....ok. So, we're not talking about a 'hit a button on the dash to lock the hubs' arrangement then? It's auto based on engagement of the 4WD tranny and load or something is it? I'm not considering fitting them.....just wondered what the alternatives were to my manual ones. I assume all the 'newer ...

Mine averages about 8.5 km/l while using it for commuting to work (35km of 100kmh highway driving) and general driving around town, *if* I take it easy and stick to 100kmh, or 110kmh at most. Any faster and it gets noticeably more thirsty. Same deal if you drive around town with your foot nailed to ...

Automatic alternative to manual hub locks?
Greetings, This may be a stoopid question, but is there an automatic alternative to manual lock/unlock hubs for the GQ Patrol? Also, is it ok to drive with the hubs locked but the tranny in 2WD? If so, for how long? If I head up the beach on nice hard sand for 30kms, can I just disengage 4WD and go ...

Just thought I'd post the outcome of this, in case anyone else encounters the same thing. Turns out one of the hub seals was in backwards. Odd 'squeak' noise from GQ front end??
Greetings, I've just noticed a strange noise coming from what appears to be the LHS front wheel of my '89 GQ. For want of a better term, it's kind of a 'rubber squeak' noise. It's definitely rotational, because it slows down as the vehicle does and it seems to change a bit when I steer as I'm ...

I did a similar thing in a Mitsu Lancer I used to own years ago. Got a spare key from the dealer and got a mobile key cutting mob to cut it for me. Unfortunately, it only let me start the car once, then disabled the engine. Friday afternoon at about 17:30 and there I was, stuck in the carpark of the ...

Running my TD42 on Biodiesel?
Greetings,
Just wondering if there's any reason why I shouldn't try running my TD42 engined Patrol on Biodiesel? I'd be making it myself from used oil. Anyone else in here doing this with a TD42?

Bleeding the entire clutch system?
Any reason I shouldn't do this? Apart from the time it may take of course. I figure if I'm going to have both the slave and the master cylinders off at the same time, I may as well flush all the fluid out and start from scratch?

Ok. I've double checked and I don't have a booster on the clutch. I also checked inside the vehicle and there's no fluid in there, so I'm making the assumption it's going out the slave. So, I'm off to Repco this morning to get a complete slave cylinder and a kit for the master. Is it feasible to ...

Yep, a smaller booster between the cylinder and firewall. *MIGHT* have a leak, drawing some fluid into the vacuum system, but if you haven't noticed any fluid leak underneath the cylinder, this might not be the case. I'll make sure tonight when I get home and have a proper look through the Gregory ...
