gas for MIG welding

Hi there just got a question, for welding steel and occasionaly gal steel should I use Argoshield or welding grade Argon? the argoshield is cheaper but you can't get it in a small size cylinder.....which is what I want to keep it as portable as possible. The W grade Argon is more expensive but I can get it in the small cyl which is what I need. p.s I only have a Unimig 172 so I want to keep it a small unit. I have tried the gasless wire but I think the gas would work better.....any thoughts?

streight argon will give poor welds with mild steel, it will work but not the best

argoshield is both better and cheaper. But I have done some steel welding with argon, and while it is nowhere near as good, it will stiilll work.

But get argoshield if at all possible.

Go the argo, it's safer health wise if your worried about that.

Argosheild light. I know you can get it in a couple of sizes. I think the one I have now is a "D" size about a metre high.....the one I used to have was about 600mm, from memory it was a "C" size. but obviously you will go through them a lot quicker.

Although to get it swapped over you will need to know someone with a gas account somewhere. At least in QLD you can no longer get bottles re-filled. And you can no longer "own" your own bottle. You must have an account to "hire" a bottle and then you can swap it over when empty. Its around $150 a year to hire an E size bottle + what ever the gas is worth. In the last 3 years i have spent $400 in bottle hire and am still on my first bottle. The hire is the killer :bad-words:

I have a MIG welder i learnt to weld without gas at all just using bunnings .8mm wire :?

Does gas help out much becuase sometimes when i'm welding the welder will sound like it's pausing and sh1t..

You must be using Flux core wire?

Otherwise your not going to get a decent weld without gas. It will be full of pourosity.

I couldn't say to be honest the wire i brought said that it's ment for Mild steel..

I welded a enclosed motocross trailer without gas but not i kinda think i may need it to get nicer welds etc..

Bunnings would be flux core wires they don't sell anything else.

a Reel (15kg) of mild will cost around $20 unless it gone up, from trade tools.

Stinless $40

Ali $60

I'd take you probably didn't pay those prices, I'm glad I don't need to worry about buying reels at work :) I've done a 15kg reel in a day, mainly last about 4 1/2 days normally.

Gasless wire is the best for welding Galvanised. Also good for windy conditions. I got my first year of bottle hire half price :D . A new roll of 15kg wire and E size migshield M1 cost me $110.
