GQ King Pins, shimming
GQ King Pins, shimming
How do you know how much shimming to preload the king pins?? Am going to be doing a full swivel hub rebuild this weekend and not sure on how to do the king pin side of things.
I've done a few swivel hub rebuilds on landcruisers and just put the original shims that were in there back in & all worked ok. Just wondering if this is still ok.

When in doubt..... UTE-ERIZE it!!!
Yeah, I went to Nissan and nearly told the guy they have to be FARK!N kidding themselves.... depending on thickness, they ranged in price from $2.80 to 19.00.... Nissan wanted something stupid like $2 per shim when i asked. Pedders had a whole shim kit for $15 from memory (dont quote me).

So I went to repco and bought some shimming paper and made my own to suit!!!

Yes, i also had cramping of the schphincter when i was given the prices. I thought $19 for a shim kit was cheap enought, and then he said "...no, thats's $xx EACH.."
Coke cans anyone??
I noticed the other day my drivers side inner hub/brake rotor seal has chewed out. Looks like i'll be up for another kit and also axle seals next time. PITA.

bolts are tightened to 40Nm as per specs in the manual(30-40Nm), and preload on the swivel housing is approx at 1.5-1.75kg dragcoxy321 wrote:How much pressure do you have on the swivel hub bearings??!!!
my manual states it should be within 0.5kg-1.75kg range which I thought was a large variance really, so I thought if it's done to the stiffest end of the range it would be better. In saying that, it still swivels nice and smoothly but not stiff.
When in doubt..... UTE-ERIZE it!!!
