hilux engine debate: whats best

Post by 83-mud-lux »

im looking for more power and torque from my hilux (4y petrol) without huge mods done to it so thought i would bring thus debate up:
wat is the best engine in a luxy.

plenty of people hav said 2 put either a 1uz or a commonwhore v6 in it but dot want to go to that extreme.

im keen on the 2.8 diesel with aftermarket turbo an intercooler but cant find anyone to tell me how they go and wats involved in the swap so any info will be appreciated. thank u

If your after something that accelerates fast I'd say you would be disappointed with the diesel. Mine puts out good power for a turbo 2.8 (100 rwhp) and has no problem sitting on 110kph + just not as much punch as I would like but hopefully one day I will pull that and put a 3rz in it.

That would be my recommendation. The 3rz seams to be the best bang for buck conversion in my opinion. There has been a few threads lately on them if you have a search there is some really good info.

had a 4y, now have a 2.8 turbo. I would not spend the money to convert to this.

I love my lux and prefer the diesel for its torque and they run much more consistently. no cold start carbie rubish etc.

but as for perfromance they are not very different, the 4 y might even be a little quicker to the hundred but i cant compare them side by side.

either go a commo or the hilux 2.7 petrol as recommended. they can make pretty good power i hear.

if you want a cheap easy petrol get a 3rz

Sounds like you made the right choice I wouldnt even put a commo 6 in the same comparison as a 1uz imo its closer to the 3rz and I would choose it over the commo pos anyday

course a commo 6 aint a comparison to a 1uz and is closer to a 3rz, a 3rz is a v6 where a 1uz is a v8!

No a 3rz is a 2.7 4 cylinder and still a better motor than a commo 6
Most people compare the commo 6 and 1uz swaps why I dont know as the 1uz is so far ahead its not funny, the 5.0L commo motor is a better comparison.

oops, my bad :P

i dunno why you would go to the effort of getting a commo v6 in when ya can put in the 1uz and most things bolt up...

haha you can have my 3rz after i put a 1uz in as i want more power and not happy with the 3rz.......jokes

i have the 3rz motor and its not bad mate, good engine but i dont think there that all great of an engine.
if i was doin an engine conversion on any lux i would much prefer an 1uz.

X2 The 1Uz is a lot cheaper to covert (doing it all your self) uses half the fuel of the commo V6. and although Mine is not Mod plated yet the conversion in total cost me $2500 (the same price as just buying the marks adaptor kit for the V6) so in my opinion the 1UZ was a good choice for me

i would love to put a 1uz in and it might not b that expensive but its not possible 4 me cus i cant drive the dam thing lol im only on my learners and i cant hav a mod plate or drive a v8 till my opens so i hav a long time to wait.

so i wanted to put the 3rz cus its fairly basic conversion and looks fairly original when the police open the bonnet more than a v6/v8 anyway lol

which 308 are you talking about they range from 122k-187kw std form around 320 -397nm in std form and on gas?????

1UZ early 190kw late 216 kw
early 353nm late 407nm

and they have 4 cams no push rods

power is the rate it which torque is applied and you have only got a few of thousand rpm of working range in the 308 or you bend push rods or the lifters pump up which ever happens first

Not sure what the new rulings are now but was told the otherday that now there is a limit on what car you can drive by the power output (e.g 200KW) not sure how accurate this info is but makes more sense than just saying you can't drive a V8 or Turbo car.

Each to their own I guess I could argue with you but why bother ;) All I will say is I would never run a commo 5L over a 1uz. ;)

yes the new rulings will be interesting to see
