Strange GQ Outer axle bearing nut

Post by captahab18 »

Just doing some work on my new-to-me Nissan 88 GQ Patrol and noted some play in the wheels. Decided to whip the hubs off and instead of a great big stub axle nut I was surprised by the circular nut.

The lock washer was also round, with threaded smaller holes same as the nut. A tiny little bolt threads to through the washer and into the nut to lock it off. The larger diameter holes look to be designed for a tool (not much unlike the one we use to remove grinder discs).

First question what is this contraption? Also worth noting there wasn’t a single snap ring found on either sides!

What tha?!

thats an aftermarket jobbie, the GQ hub nuts have a tendency to loosen.

These ones couple with another lock ring that is keyed to the spindle then bolts to that hub nut.

See the GU ones

that is a nissan nut found on late model GQ and all GU. I change the older 2 nuts and tab washer out for these. There should still be a snap ring on the drive cone though.

Yep looks like part of a GU hub nut with the locking plate and screw missing.

The snap ring goes on the outer groove for manual locking hubs
