Post by Middo »

my car has 33" tyres, 2" suspension lift, 2" body lift, and a tube bar. should i fill out the QLD DOT vehicle modification application form and put all this in it and see if they say ok. or will they just say NO because of the tyres and tube bar? cheers

Depends on what car... 33's may or may not be ruled out.
2" susp..
2" body..
Tube bar..
All are approvable if fitted and built to comply with design rules etc.

Probably right. What's on the tyre placard?

Technically, 31s are too big for my Pajero (in Qld) but that's what I had on there when the body lift was inspected. I didn't draw attention to them, the inspectors didn't seem to mind.

If you take the vehicle in with 31s on don't mention it on the paperwork, and be polite and cooperative. Give them an excuse to dislike you and you'll need lots of personal lubricant.

i think its 205 on the tyre placard. realy hard to read but. i hav been driving my car around for more than a year on the sunny coast with 33's so im probably not gunna worry about it until i get told to change them. so far i havnt recieved a defect notice so i think im in the clear.

Technically they are, same as 33s on a patrol/landcruiser, but they do usually let you get away with it unless you get an a-hole copper or give them a reason to pick them

7.50-16 or 33x10.5-15..
Mod plate in engine bay (fitted with turbo back in 97) says 33x12.5-15

7.50R16 is smaller than a 33, closer to a 32. Off the top of my head they ar around 24-26mm bigger and in Qld you can go no more than 15mm bigger at the moment. As for the mod plate I'm unaware of any mod code relating to a tyre's size in Qld, but I do believe you about it being there as I saw it myself. It was prollie more to do with that size tyre was on it when the turbo was mod plated though. As I said though it is extremely rare to get defected for 33s on a patrol/cruiser, I guess its sorta unofficially legal.

Find a tyre size calculator on the net, I use this one:

http://www.exploroz.com/vehicle/tyres/sizecalc.aspx

Type in your largest tyre size on your placard, it will give you an overall height.

Add 15mm to the tallest tyre height...Thats all you can go

Also 4WD vehicles can go 1.5 times wider on the tyre width as opposed to cars @ 1.3 times width. Off road passenger vehicles with solid beam axles (live) front and rear can increase wheel track by no more than 50mm and cars or car derivatives (IFS/IRS) can increase track by no more than 26mm.
Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.

In Qld you can 15mm larger in diameter and 25mm smaller

I think you will find on some, if not all cruisers that 33s fall into the legal catagory.

If QLD transport see this mod plate, they will remove it from the vehicle on the spot.

There is no mod code for tyre or wheel change, so the mod plate is worthless.

You don't get it do you.. .... The mod plate isn't for the tyres...
IT'S FOR THE TURBO... It just happens to have 33x12.5 written on it in the tyre size section.

The OP is about a Hilux/4Runner anyway... back to topic...... ;)

I am no Hilux/4runner expert but I've heard that 30's are the largest legal tyre in QLD although you will probably get away with 31's without dramas...
As far as large 31's you will want to look at American brands as they are nearly all over the stated size whereas Japanese etc are smaller than advertised.

ah ok. sweet deals. my 33's dont even look that big. im just stressing cause i dont want to loose any diff clearance hight as my IFSS (independant freakin stupid suspension) is already super close to the ground.
