Re: King of the Rim (Competition) 16&17 July
To Geoff and the Mog crew,
Firstly, it's good to hear that you are all right Geoff. Secondly, we appreciate all feedback about our Park and events and wouldn't expect you to be banned from the Outer limits site because of your comments.
Originally we did have the Police attending our event, however due to low numbers of spectators, we did not need them. They did of course know the event was on. The 20 plus SES volunteers assisted in crowd control, among other things, and were a great support on the day.
In terms of recovery, it was discussed at the briefing that Brett would be doing all recoveries on the Buggy/Truggy track. When I got to you with my recovery gear (that I had just used winching another vehicle off a steep hill), I assessed the situation and the Mog wasn't going anywhere, so after the water arrived, I decided to get Brett to get you out. In addition, I notified Brendan from SES Scenic Rim Rescue who was ready with gear to get you down off the hill to be medically assessed but you said you were okay. I also asked if you thought you needed to go to Beaudesert hospital and you stated you were okay. Perhaps I should have insisted on having you stretchered out as a precaution. A good learning point for me for next time as obviously I assessed the situation a lot differently from you.
We are a relatively new business and this is the first time we have run a speed-type event, so thanks again for your feedback. We will take your comments and all other issues on-board at our next planning meeting so as to improve all aspects for future event. You are welcome back at our Park at any time.
Regards
Brenden Harris

EDITED:
I also think this event has great potential, and that over time the issues that have popped up will be adressed, just some things i noticed that can be looked at is spectator safety, spectator viewing and a bit of organisation for marshalls need a bit of work.
one thing i noticed is when the bobbed gq wagon recovered the zook that was on its side, that no marshalls stood in and took a bit of control to move the crowd a safe distance away when they were winching it back onto its wheels, some of that group were only a couple metres away from a "live" winch rope, and then there were a sea of S.E.S people standing back around the food stall just watching, i realise as this was not a designated winch event it may have been overlooked but just for future events, they could maybe be directed to clear the crowd away from recovery vehicles when they are doing their thing.
And im sure Digsy from the Cartel will reply, but i'll say it aswell, the boys didnt head down to the event to do any comentating but only to run the Cartel stand, but one of the ladies from the S.E.S approached them and asked if they had a microphone to go with the rest of the P.A system, which was playing the offroad racing dvds, and asked if they could let the crowd know about the food on sale throughout the day,
So he did that and let everyone know about the clothing on offer, kids rides and Maxxis tyre specials, then.... as both of them do haha, he got into the comentating rythm and let the crowd know about happenings on the rest of the track, which at some times may not have been fully correct
(My Fault for bad information collecting) but still helped the people sitting around waiting for the vehicles to flood back know what was going on out in the hills.
i think that if they head down for the next round and were given a list of "Vehicle Specs" , and a radio linked to marshalls, so that they can have updated information sent through to them during the day, they could really help keep the crowd informed and involved as the day progresses,
Ok i think thats all i have to say, my apologies for ranting and probably making no sense,
Cheers Mosko.

than 20 or so mins later help arrived..... thats ok ill just drive around and winch him over with my diff winch and be on my way
i raced back to my car as the winching was being finished off so i could attempt to move for the orange weapon to pass.......

SUNDAY...
well early morning rhett fixed his tyre, drove crampy climb with a flat, and i fixed my front diff.. put everything back together and headed for the creek but this time rhett and i headed UP.
i got about 20m into the hard section and tore the 6 bolts off my locking hub... parked up and watched rhett drive up to the big double step..
it doesnt look like much in the pic but its pretty steep.
rhett drove it easy, the strap was hooked for safety but thats it...

Maxxis King of the Rim is a hit
General
Monday, 19 July 2010 13:07
Maxxis King of the Rim held on Saturday 17 July at Scenic Rim Adventure Park, Swan Gully Road, Bromelton (Beaudesert), was the first of its kind in Australia and it was a hit with the competitors and the spectators.
The event attracted competitors from all over Queensland and New South Wales. Maxxis King of the Rim was no ordinary offroad event, it was a fast endurance 4WD race, “fastest lap wins”. This tested the driver’s skill and their navvies’ nous like no other 4WD race has done before in Australia.
The event had eight Buggy/Truggy class entries and five Extreme Modified/Winch class 4x4 driving vehicles, with an additional four cars having to be scrapped before the event started.
Teams endured 4 different challenges:
1 - long track – this track was about endurance and stamina, with navvies running up and down hills, stopping at fuelling areas, to ensure their vehicles could go on.
In the Buggy/Truggy class only four completed this track, with the winner’s time taking 48 minutes and longest time 1 hour 45 minutes. Four of the vehicles didn’t complete the course with a major roll over and quite scary rescue for Team MOG up in the mountain.
In the extreme/winch class only one completed the long track with all other competitors’ cars breaking down, just on the shear endurance of the laps not so much the terrain of the track.
2 - short track combined – full of obstacles, logs, large wombat holes and giant tyres made great viewing for the spectators as they grasped their breath with drivers who looked like they were about to take a tumble but safely recovered to the roar of the crowd, a great spectacle for all.
3 - class specific track – By track three, some vehicles had repaired to enter again others were out for the count, but all competitors successfully completed the stages in around 7 minutes making this track counts down to the seconds to determine the winner.
4 - a night run – this track is Scenic Rim Adventure Park’s signature track, there is no other creek run like this in Australia and it was lit up for the drive, a great event for those that competed and even more magnificent for those that hung around in the cold to watch.
The winners in each class won $1500 worth of Maxxis Tyres and were presented a display cheque.
•Buggy/Truggy Class winner was Snake Racing from Penshurst in Sydney, New South Wales - Driver Matthew Dunk and Navvie Mitch Ward.
•Extreme Modified/Winch class winner was Team Diesel from Hillcrest, Queensland - Driver Chris Wood and Navvie Chris Brame.
The SES feed the troops well and raised some funds for their group by providing sausages, burgers and drinks. Kids and adults enjoyed a go on the mini jeep carts, crowds enjoyed the commentary and music from Offroad Cartel and browsed the stores and our major sponsor Maxxis offered great tyres specials.
Spectators were right in the action able to experience as they watch the driver’s facial expressions as they fly around a bend and watch the navvie as they move around the rugged terrain by foot, giving the driver direction on lines to take to successful get them through the tracks. The event attracted a few hundred spectators and as they left the majority of whispers were when, is the next event, I’ll be back.
Event organisers where happy with the first time event and look forward to running stage two 26 and 27 November 2010.

Just wanted to comment, when Rhett's car was being winched on the tyres, I myself Kareen in Scenic Rim Uniform ran over and asked the crowd to get back, I then also asked the SES guy standing their to assist me, as the crowds were being rude to me and ignoring me. I then atleast straightening up the spectators behind rope and asked Dan at Offroad Cartel to make an announcment which he did twice and no one paid any attention.

HI Brett & MitchRolly wrote:Now this has just gone too far! Brenden has opened this park, given us somewhere to drive, and events to compete in. He is constantly learning, progressing and improving in each of these aspects. He has been ever so helpful and approachable whenever we have proposed ideas or issues, and learns from our feedback. But then to cop something like this, surely is going to make him wonder why he is bothering!
Firstly Geoff, you too mate need to have a reality check! Does it ever make you wonder why your vehicle does stand up on the front, when no-one else has any issues? It is pretty obvious to everyone that YES, the mog is front heavy. The area in which your vehicle rolled, did not arise any concern for any other competitor in the field. When setting up the tracks, no-one would have considered the track to be of any safety issue. It was not a high-risk roll over point by any means! So it definately wasn't a lack of care from Brenden's part.
In all seriousness, it was probably lucky for the competition that you didn't make it to the creek... The fact that you did not bother to go assess the creek, after being warned before the event, shows a lack of concern for your own safety anyways. If you had of made it to the creek, we probably would have had a repeat of TT09 where the mog would have deemed the track impassable. If you think that drop was bad, you should have seen some of the ledges that followed!!!
Also, why go running your mouth about Brenden's safety issues with tracks up the top of hills, when you are behind TT. Heartbreak Ridge and Jaw Breaker pose greater risks and higher chances of roll over, and they are also up in the hills.
I understand that you are upset about damaging your vehicle, and having a scare, but these sort of public sprayings don't do any good to the sport. I am not one to direct my opinions towards individuals, but this is just too far. You might have already done enough damage, to ruin what is our favourite place to go wheeling, and compete in some fun events. I hope your little rant has helped you ease any embarrassment. But seriously mate, if you can't hack the pace, don't come race.
Regards Brett & Mitch
I did expect some flack but not from you Brett & Mitch if you re read what I have written 35 degrees is not Hard in any ones books but at 300 odd metres up it is Dangerous it didn’t look that difficult and strapped the mog as a precaution but Look I drove and I rolled it I’m not embarrassed about it I am relieved to be alive and walking
If we had made it to the creek we would have assessed the situation and yes we did take on board the warnings about the creek about having to winch down backwards from both of you and Rhett and as (far as a lack of concern for your own safety anyways.) The only reason I’m walking is that I had 75 mm 5 point harness, race seat, window nets, and helmet all safety gear I believe
Obviously us digging the hole in the mud at TT09 must still be a problem to you I’m SORRY OK The Mog must be the only truck capable of digging hole in mud with all of its 120 hp and yes I think I had BIG tires that year 38.5 inch !!!!
I don’t understand your comment ? (when you are behind TT.)
Any way that’s enough of my bitching to end on a positive
I think Scenic Rim Adventure Park has great potential
1, It’s close Brisbane 2, It has some great terrain 3, It’s right on the QLD/ NSW border so both states can compete there
I think King of the RIM has even greater potential
1, Great Name King of the RIM 2, Could become the Aussie equivalent King of the Hammers
My Idea of a good comp is That it's Not easy but everyone finish’s, The spectators are entertained , You get to drive your comp truck back on to the trailer, The best Driver and Truck WINS and everyone goes away saying
YA I’ll BE BACK!!!!!
I want to see Brenden, the park and the comp succeed that why I made the 18 hr round trip but I stand by what I said in my first post
Geoff

Re: King of the Rim (Competition) 16&17 July
mate, the reason we were soo annoyed with your comments is because we are trying to support the park, and constantly people are knocking brenden and his events. If people have an issue with how things are, why not give brenden a call, instead of spraying the park over a public forum. All we want is growth of the sport, but if people keep carrying on the way they do, what motive does that give the organisers. Apologies for the rant, but we dont want our favourite park being affected by some bs on the interent.

Thats a pretty good point dave cause that car was on its lid for about 20 to 25 mins before the next car came along and if we did not go looking for help we would have not seen any one till then. I think that if there is going to be another event to this scale there really has to be alot more marshalls out around the course especially on the parts where you would call a high risk area. As a competitor it felt like the event run smoothly
and was a heap of fun. But the old rule is that there is never a problem untill there is a problem.

Re: King of the Rim (Competition) 16&17 July
The orange overall army would be ideal for being posted at certain points of the track,
Armed with water, a fire extinguisher and radio per checkpoint and realying to each other where on the track the vehicles have made it to, for e.g
S.E.S checkpoint #1 " 11_evl has passed us entering the cal's creek section and heading to your location,,,, over"
S.E.S checkpoint #2 " Rodger rubber ducky thats a big ten four!"
S.E.S checkpoint #1 " checkpoint two, a maxxis treppador tyre and rim has just rolled past us, we are not sure what has happened to the rest of the car car maybe you should head down the creek and check it out?"
well you get the point anyhows!!!

At SRAP when a single car signs in we suggest they try to tag along with someone else and only travel tracks suitable for their car so hopefully if your situation did occur you would have someone on hand immediately.
Any extreme 4x4 event when man pushes his car to its limits the participants must be personally prepared for the unexpected and danger risks.
Some competitors may not have realised SRAP started the day with three recovery cars plus five or seven guys from the Logan 4x4 Club and three other experienced 4x4 drivers who had all offered to assist with recoveries if required during the King of the Rim.
I believe the lack of this knowledge with some competitors has raised some of these safety concerns and comments.
In future we will ask these volunteers to wear special SRAP vests during events.
All comp cars are required to have fire extinguishers on board
We had a number of SES recovery trucks ready for emergency situations on hand throughout the day and the Beaudesert hospital is located ten minutes drive from the park.
Scenic Rim Adventure park management are more than happy to discuss any safety or other concerns people have regarding the park.
There is a large section of the public that would like to see all 4x4 cars band and I believe any negative comment listed on an open public forum like this one without an accompanying positive suggested solution is just fuelling their fire to ban 4x4’s not only in the bush but also on our road systems. So please continue your entertaining comments on these types of forums but also be mindful and try to keep it non personal and positive.

Re: King of the Rim (Competition) 16&17 July
we all know the risks taken in any event and can take precautions to prevent any major problems , in daves case a working winch would have been a big help to self recover .(did you have a cb radio to let the recovery crew know you had rolled ?) there is a track to the right coming down the creek were all cars could have gone around this section if desired .
yes brenden does realise of a few short comings with the event and they will be addressed . any long course event like outback challenge or king of hammers it is impossible to marshall the whole track and impossible to predict were vehicles will have problems eg jeff in the mog no one predicted there would be a roll over on that section of track .
if you enter in a single seater buggy, loose control, roll on one of the flat sections, knock yourself out and catch on fire and the marshalls are a km away in the creek where the higher risk section is the end result would sadly be the same ( there are to many scenarios ).

totally nothing to do with the question i asked..social wheeling is not competition wheeling
Any extreme 4x4 event when man pushes his car to its limits the participants must be personally prepared for the unexpected and danger risks.
not true..as the organiser of the event it is your duty to ensure that every safety precaution has been taken to limit the chance of anything untoward happening..this is what risk assessments are done for..yes the competitor needs to be prepared for it however the organiser must also be prepared for the worst scenarios to occur

my concern was not with having them there, my concern was with the response time taken..if i wanted to wheel in the middle of the bush knowing full well that help is a minimum 20 minutes away then that is at my own risk...if i am competing in an event which as part of the course sends me on that route then that is not at my risk, that is a path set by the organisers

yes i carry a fire extinguisher, but if i am injured and unable to put the fire out then who is going to help me, Beaudesert Hospital ten minutes drive away wont be able to do much

i have no safety concerns with the park...i do however have some safety concerns with the running of the event hence my question

i would be one of the last people who would want the 4wd scene shut down...indeed i make my livelihood out of it
as far as i am concerned any questions or concerns about safety are not negative comments..i only have one life and i intend on getting as much out of it as i can

well i guess if that is the way that Brendan sees this as well then i will stick to social wheeling at the park where i can have someone close by in case of such an event as i dont like leaving my life to chance..perhaps i am just getting too old now

i think you are ya big sook. Cliffhanger you dont see cars for an hour at times on the 5hr GPS stage. Do the competing vehicles at king of the rim have to have a vehicle mounted UHF and is there a dedicated chanel for the stage your on?
