Sounds like to me it would be easier to have your tow rig towing capacity uprated by an engineer. Gu is 3.5T towing so it should need much to get the GQ uprated to say 3T atleast.

What part of "You cannot increase your GCM" don't people understand?
You can increase your GVM on certain types of vehicles and it can only be carried out by the company that has "Type Approval" for that vehicle. You cannot go and do it yourself and get it approved by an Engineer. I am quite sure that is the way it works in all states. Type Approval is given out of Canberra and not from the States.
And as stated before, increasing the GVM only decreases your towing capacity when the vehicle is loaded to it new GVM.

So of that being said my mate has a gu ute which is from factory rated at 2500kg. He had since added air bag suspension and had it engineered for 3500kg. How does that work then?

Re: 500kg car trailer to carry 2000kg
I take it was a GVM upgrade, if so I also take it was someone who had type approval for that upgrade.evanstaniland wrote:So of that being said my mate has a gu ute which is from factory rated at 2500kg. He had since added air bag suspension and had it engineered for 3500kg. How does that work then?
If it was the GCM - towing capacity, I think you would find it has not been legally done as it cannot be done by law, I know it cannot be done in Queensland and I am quite sure that you will find it will be the same in other states.
You cannot change the Manfactures GCM, Gross Combination Mass = (weight of loaded vehicle & loaded trailer)
You can only upgrade your GVM, Gross Vehicle Mass = (weight of loaded vehicle)
This applies in Queensland and as a GVM upgrade is a type approval I am quite sure that it will apply to all states.
The best bet is to talk to the Governing Body in your state and not an Engineer.
You have to comply with the Governing Body (Transport) not with what an Engineer or Approved Person says, we do get it wrong sometimes.

How can these new utes come out with a "3T towing capacity" when a big ass GQ isnt even that? Is there a marketing gimmick or just well built new utes? I'm talking the brand new Ford Rangers and Mazda BT50 style of ute...

Because that is what the manufacture has stated as the towing capacity.

Re: 500kg car trailer to carry 2000kg
Can't see how a eg- Mazda bt50 weighing approx 2050kg (kerb weight) can safely tow 3.5T being its about 1.5t higher then it weighs.
I wouldn't buy one for that sort of towing, cruiser/patrol 3.5t towing would be much safer.
Or am I missing something, seems more like the manufacturers way of comparing who's got the bigger **** then weather it's even practical or safe.

He Micka do you have a picture of your trailer ?
So sounds like a trailer that weighs under 500kg is possible, getting a patrol under 2000kg will be the challenge.

Thanks for the pictures. Was expecting a very minimal trailer. That one looks fairly regular with a few differances. What size steel did you use for the construction.

I looked into this 2/3 years ago as I also had a gu ute for towing. 2 engineers in nsw said it could be upgraded to tow 3.5 the same as the wagons if the ute had the same weight distribution as the driveline was identical. Ie heavy ass tray. But I never bothered going ahead wih it.

the earlier 80 series landcruiser had 2500kg tow rating. the later models had the 3500kg tow rating.joshy wrote:XTREME MMM wrote:I take it was a GVM upgrade, if so I also take it was someone who had type approval for that upgrade.evanstaniland wrote:So of that being said my mate has a gu ute which is from factory rated at 2500kg. I think you would really struggle to get your ute under 2 ton. I just chopped my wagon into a ute, it currently has no bullbar or any extras on it . Weighed it the other day and it was 2.1 ton, then you've gotta add bullbar, winch, sliders, cage, spare tyre and whatever else you have
