I take it was a GVM upgrade, if so I also take it was someone who had type approval for that upgrade.evanstaniland wrote:So of that being said my mate has a gu ute which is from factory rated at 2500kg. He had since added air bag suspension and had it engineered for 3500kg. How does that work then?

If it was the GCM - towing capacity, I think you would find it has not been legally done as it cannot be done by law, I know it cannot be done in Queensland and I am quite sure that you will find it will be the same in other states.
You cannot change the Manfactures GCM, Gross Combination Mass = (weight of loaded vehicle & loaded trailer)
You can only upgrade your GVM, Gross Vehicle Mass = (weight of loaded vehicle)
This applies in Queensland and as a GVM upgrade is a type approval I am quite sure that it will apply to all states.
The best bet is to talk to the Governing Body in your state and not an Engineer.
You have to comply with the Governing Body (Transport) not with what an Engineer or Approved Person says, we do get it wrong sometimes.

the earlier 80 series landcruiser had 2500kg tow rating. the later models had the 3500kg tow rating.joshy wrote:XTREME MMM wrote:I take it was a GVM upgrade, if so I also take it was someone who had type approval for that upgrade.evanstaniland wrote:So of that being said my mate has a gu ute which is from factory rated at 2500kg. I looked into this 2/3 years ago as I also had a gu ute for towing. 2 engineers in nsw said it could be upgraded to tow 3.5 the same as the wagons if the ute had the same weight distribution as the driveline was identical. Ie heavy ass tray. But I never bothered going ahead wih it.
