Is this normal???

Post by TONKA PAJ »

Just a small(ish) thing thats been concerning me about my new 96 3.5 j top. Takin off in first (its 5spd), i notice a bit of vibration thru the driveline (somewhere) as i begin to gather pace, kinda like the sound/feeling when u accelarate in a high gear at a low speed, but more of a sort of grinding. It doesnt do it if i give it a few revs off the line, but i cant be doin that every time i take off
So yeah, any ideas?? Other than that, its been awsome so far, i'll post some pics soon ;)

Hmm, i got nfi, but it may well be either of the two mentioned.

Would either the chain drive xfer case, or the uni's in the drive shafts be a big (costly) thing to fix??

If its any help, it does it in second quite loudly if im coasing slowly (like 20km/h) then stops as i accelerate more.
Shits me!!!! :x

my problem exactly. Uni Joints in the tail shaft. Easy to check, crawl under and try moving the joint in all directions. If there is slipage, get it relaced - $200 cost me in Windsor.

Last thing you want is a tail shaft come loose and fly round under the car - have seen the results of that... not pretty.

Its not clutch chatter is it?
On heavy vehicles the cluctch some times takes a couple of grabs to get max friction.
My triton does this and I understand this is common prob with 4x4s

Supose the question is-is it actually a vibration or slippage
Slippage will make the drive train shudder as it is effectivly dumping the clutch several times until it hooks up properly.
Note if this is the cause it will chatter which is like severe vibration

I don't think you have a front UJ on the rear shaft, I think 3.5s have a CV joint.
Does it change when you put it in 4wd, it shouldn't be the chain because that is only for front drive.
