Just wondering if it would be ok to remove the tow ball from my setup and attach a shackle?

I dont think I would like to see that done. There is a possibility of tearing the chassis mount for the towbar. I have seen it happen where the mount started to tear away from the rear cross member beside the weld on a Rocky using a similar type towbar.
Why not look at a Toyota recovery hook, bolted directly underneath the chassis member. Get one with the spring steel clip that holds your strap to the hook regardless of tension or not.

This was how ours was... we used the tow point as recovery.... no probs.

From the factory Feroza's had a recovery point (a loop similar to GQ Patrols) bolted onto the exact spot where your towbar is Jason. If you look underneath that is part of the chassis that it bolts to, so should be strong enough.
The only problem could be the leverage applied by hooking onto the towbar tongue, the factory loop was located in the middle of the four bolts.
