no damage worries there, they don't drive real nice at all without the rear but if the front drive shaft is off it drives fine.you will notice a little more backlash though.

Dont the rear wheel bearings run on the diff oil? If I am correct then with the centre removed there will be do oil in the housing.

Can some one clarify this.

As I understand it, if there is diff oil in your bearings, you've got problems. Bearings should be sealed from axle oil and run in their own grease.

That is the case in jap trucks and later model rovers but by memory the early rovers ran oil.

Some one will know the answer.

Thanks.

That means that if he drives it without a diff centre installed and no oil in the housing, he runs a great chance of wheel bearing failure.

Carry circlip pliers and 2 lts of gear oil. Pull the axles and flanges, then detach flanges and replace them with the caps.
Remove the tailshaft then all is good with minimal loss of oil.

Carry 2 or so litres of oil as well

oil

1986 was the change from oil fed bearings to grease(could be wrong) but you can pull the seal from the hub/stub axle in the later ones to run them on oil.

yep, its a very common mod. Use an RTC3511 hub seal.
No more drive shaft/drive flange spline wear, and no more need to adjust the wheel bearings every 6-12 months.
