Shorty in 4WD Monthly

Post by Hekta »

I got my new one today. There's a shorty in there that looks pretty cool.

3" suspension lift (ball joint flip & spacers), body lift and 35's

Points of interest. Commodore Injectors (bigger than ours or something), 3"(iirc) throttle body, headers and exhaust system.
I'll read it again tomorrow and probably edit this post with more details, but for now I'm going to bed.

Anyone know the rig ?

I see it every other day when I go into town. Sweet looking rig. Haven't seen it with steel wheels b4, it's always got alloys and 33's on which look huge let alone the 35's.

Already priced common *hore injectors and they are cheap as a new aftermarket part. Just wondering if 3L V6 TR Magna throttle bodies are the go. Might need a trip to the wrecker with the verniers and a measuring list

a bit OT...hmm I'm thinking 2.25" exhaust incl. hi flow cat (leave std manifolds for the mo'), get the air into the airbox by more direct means and a dyno tune. Then down the track...larger throttle body and maybe S-AFC or similar, with possibility of injectors.

RPW have larger throttle bodies btw.

Is it a manual or auto and does it have a lower range transfercase kit in it??
Also whats the ball joint flip and spacers do? Just clearance for the tyres or something??

I don't believe it does

It raises the upper A-arm giving you more room to wind up the torsion bars, or more down travel after the torsion bars are wound up. The disadvantage is that the ball joing is no longer seated in its 'hole' and only the bolts are holding it in. If the bolts snap the arm will seperate from the rest of the suspension.

Do a search for "ball joint flip" in this forum. There's a couple of threads about 'em.

thats tough  hopefully what my little paj will look like soon, well early next yr, the ally bar for body lift is sitting there waiting to be turned, and i got some 15x8 sunnies coming from uncle that im swapping for my alloys and am gonna spray gunmetal grey, and then early next yr ill be looking for some 32/34" JT2s, should be good i hope, whatever happens after that i dunno, thinkin gearing, then maybe a respray in black, and see what happens with miyagi's SAS and what i decide on doing, wouldnt be til june anyways,

i like the jabber, thanks heaps Hekta for scanning that in, especially for us deprived folk without a subscription, gettin all confused about the months of issues and all  still claiming its 4WD Monthlys fault

ball joint flip doesnt really appeal to me, i dont like the way that the ball joint doesnt sit in its place anymore, more is just held there and if soemthing breaks then i wouldnt like to see the end result :? could be very very nasty, though there is some on here running it isnt there???

dean :D

p.s - so who is it??? slosh says he sees it every other day when he goes into town, but it has NSW rego??? slosh if it is the same one tell him to come on and tell us about it, its nice, otherwise if ur reading this let us know who u are ;)

Yeah got it in the post today.
It says he's in Qld.
He has an Outer Limits sticker on it and is aware of the crawler gears so must read the forum (you can tell by some of the other mods).
One thing though is the article said it's producing 140Kw and 340Nm at the flywheel - I highly dispute that (especially the torque figure).
Nice truck with some great mods.

im sure ud know heaps more than me frank, especially about the jabbers engine, but from my experiences with road cars, the difference in figures from the flywheel to the wheels can be huge, and i imagine that with fourbies its even worse, the loss of power through the gearbox, transfer, diffs, cvs, driveshafts, and wheels, possibly the figure might be that high at the flywheel but id love to see the figure at the wheels, and agreeing with you, especially the torque reading, its rather high :? but hey, yeh my prediction would be a 20-30% loss of those figures through the driveline to the wheels making that what, 112kw / 272Nm at the wheels, to around 98kw / 238Nm at the wheels, this somewhat sounds better, especially when stock figures are at 109kw / 234Nm, and that would be at the fly also, so when u take figures at the wheels sounds more realistic, its still a 28% increase in power, and a 45% increase in torque att he fly, and thats big in itself. just somethign tot hink about i guess,

its still an awesome rig and i love it  wish hed get on here a bit more :)

Oh yeah I understand corrected dyno readings - had quite a few cars dynoed (including one sick Cordia).
Mine was getting 92Kw @ 5500rpm after all the mods and that was with the 34"s on. Corrected flywheel torque was only marginally up from standard (can't remember exactly but about 10%).
Before dyno = 76Kw (everything standard).
So I reckon mine would be about 115-120Kw at the flywheel even though it gained 16Kw adding it to 109Kw is not the real world as output drops away with age. I reckon torque on mine would be about 245-250Nm (standard 234Nm).
The mods were very noticeable but you soon get used to them and crave more

yeh definitely frank, the mods bugs bite and they never stop itching, but yeh either way u look at it, u can make figures look better than they really are, and also a 28% and a 45% increase in power and torque is MASSIVE , if its true either way, at the fly its still huge and at the wheels, im just waiting til it comes out in the newsagents so i can get it, maybe i should get a subscription  maybe when i get some money  never gonna happen, not once ur bitten ;)

Yeh those figures are definately a bit, shall we say, fudged... The 3.5L only has 300Nm at 3000rpm I think, sounds about right? and it has an intake plennum designed to increase torque... There is no way a snorkel and exhaust will boost the 3L torque in such a big way, its just no possible.

Mind you, our 3.5L has 600hp and 1200Nm :D

Still a nice looking rig none the less
