Rockhoppers
Rockhoppers
gday,
Just thinking about getting a rockhopper. If anyone has one in their zook, what is it like? And what difference has i made to their zook Both at speed and offroad, also how much did they pay for it...
thanks

it depends on size of wheels etc. series 1 or series 3,both dufferent gear ratios, have to choose what suits.cheers.
A mate of mine had a 1 litre zook with s1 hoppers and 31x10's. it was good offroad but a slug on road.

every thing you do to your zook is a compromise,
better of road gearing = shitty on road
better on road = shitty off road.
you'll have to look at what you'll really want, then make the decition.

Calmini 5.14:1 ratio in my zook, on 32's low range is good, and high isnt too bad either. crawl is arond 70:1 in 1st low. As said its all a compromise when you modify a car. Best bet is to work out where you want to take the car, and get gearing to suit, as its at least $1000 for a set of gearing, then install costs. Better to spend once and get it right.

I have a 1.3 WT zook on 30" tyres.
I will probably only ever go up to 31" max.
I was tossing up between the Calmini 4.16 or the 5.14.
(both are currently on backorder at calmini anyway)
I know lower is better but I dont want to completely stuff up my high range gearing.
And another thing to consider is the the 4.16 gears are $100US cheaper than the 5.14s.
What do you guys reckon?
Paul.

are your fishing spots really hard to get too? otherwise i wouldnt be wasting my money personally. i ran 32's with standard gearing for quite a while..wouldnt say id recommend it though. maybe you should be looking towards a 1L case instead if you want a little lower?beaver700 wrote:gday fellas,
thanks for your input. I mainly will be travelling on road, so which one do you suggest I get, plus a bit of off road, primarily for just reaching isolated fishing spots

nope.. its not like your bigger trucks...
it has a reduction in high range also..
as you would know hi range is hi 2 (normal) or hi 4 (same but in 4wd)

I got the 4.1s after having 31 mongrels for a year on and offroad.. it makes it easier on the clutch onroad and offroad my clutch doesnt smell anymore trying to spin the tyres and stuff.
The onroad driving is back to a more standard gearing so the engine works better and offroad the low ratios are much funner to crawl around driving up stuff that i couldn't before.

Just had word from Calmini that their 5.14 gears are back in stock.

Sounds about right... I paid just over $1100 for mine last year from him on my WT/31's. Is a tad lower on road than I would like for a daily driver, But I get good mileage out of it and its awesome off road in low rangeDAZZ wrote:$1200 delivered. If you buy direct from the US you can get them for around $900-$1000 aus dollars or so.
But I just found out that Calmini wont take Mastercard unless it has a US billing address .
They want payment wired to them (direct money transfer).
How do I do this? Is it as simple as doing a transfer into an Aus account?
Can I just use netbank or is it not that simple?
Paul.

Has anyone heard good or bad things about the Trail tough gear sets?
They do a 4.9 which will probably suit my 30" (or 31" later) tyres nicely.
A bit lower than the series 1 4.16 without being super mega too low for 30s.
