Patrol axle seal

Rear axle seal on a 92 GQ Patrol.

Is it a difficult job for a guy with minimal mechanical skills ?

Any tips ?

you need a VERY heavy press since while there you may as well do the bearings

88 bux for a patrol rear axle from wreckers... saves time and heartache me thinks...
custom bar work, 4x4 parts, trailers, anything out of steel/alloy :D

Well, the seal is out :D I will take it to Ripco tomorrow and get a new one (and a new O-ring aswell) and pop it all back together.

Wasn't as big a job as I was expecting :cool: Wheel off, brake caliper off, disk off, undo 8 nuts, slide out axle then pop the seal out :D

Bruce - the bearings were replaced not too long ago, so they are ok

i'd go to nissan these aftermarket seals don't seal as good as nissan ones

mines needed to be done too, diff full of mud, run genuine parts as they fit correctly and have no hastles.

recently just put a aftermarket exhaust manifold gasket on when doing to motor swap and its blown apart, it was only 2-3 months old!

genuine all the way!

Don't forget there is two seals on the rear axles!! An inner and outer seal. The inner one is a piece of piss to replace, but the outer one will require you to remove the bearing. Removing the bearings will usually require a pretty heavy duty press, in the order of 30 tonne.

What can happen on the outer seal is that the seal lip can wear a groove on the shaft, which can lead to a leak. A new seal won't necessarily help. You can try installing the seal in a slightly different position or install a speedi sleeve over the shaft, which gives you a new surface.

thats what i was referring to in regards to replacing the axle.. as it seems like an easier option.

oh man I did mine with an aftermarket seal and it only lasted 1 weekend.

after changing to a nissan seal it has lasted 4 years
