Trail Creeper 6.5:1 Gears

Has anyone heard much about these 6.5 gears or the quaility of Trail Gear products in general??

I know one of the main guys defected from Marlin a couple of years ago to start Trail Gear up.

Just sold my dual cases from the hilux and I'm looking for gearing to put in my new zuk. The price seems to good to pass up.

sounds good but 2 things came to mind
A) its in the states so its abit dearer than 400 bucks
B) it say you must do alittle grinding for it to fit properly which doesn't sound good

I understand its in US dollars, considering its a US site and company . I am not that retarted.

Pretty sure most ultra low ratio transfer gears like trail tough 6.4's and calmini 6.5's need grinding of the case as well. Even Rockhopper need it but I wouldn't even consider getting them because of price and previous breakage issues.

I havn't heard of them before!

They sound cheap but i havn't heard of grinding to get reduction gears in before!

id say they would be equal strength to most of the other gears as there probally made in the same places

Ive got 6.5:1 RH and the casing was grinded to fit the larger gears. They have been used a couple of times so far and they have performed really well.

When you look at the instructions for fitting Calmini they actually state that some (not all, some) transfer cases may need some minor grinding (dremel).

Does this mean that some cases have more internal clearance than others? Is there any rule of thumb to indicate which ones won't need grinding?

These new TrailGear ones certainly sound good by the ad, seem to have all the right bits etc and may be a great product at a great price. I hope they are good and inject some price competition, but I would hate to be buying version 1.0 before any bugs are fixed or find out that cheaper steel means shorter life etc etc There are already a few unhappy ex-Rock Hopper owners out there.

Over $100 is not incorrect. (bloody useless but not incorrect)

They may not have sent any to Australia yet. Ballpark Calmini gears from US are between $110-150 AUD by FedEX depending on where in Aus you are and the current exchange rate (currently not bad at 78+ cents in the USD)

Approx $640 plus freight bargain on under $800

If ever you want to check AUD USD comparison just go to Rocky Road website and use the currency converter. Or any other currency converter out there.

Or if you watch the news and hear them saying that the Aussie Dollar is worth/buys 78.3 US cents etc Then take the USD price $500 divide that by the value of an Aussie dollar (78.3 cents) whicvh in this case equals 6.386, then multiply by 100 (cents in a dollar), equals $638.57 Aussie dollars. Bear in mind that this price can vary slightly day to day based on the exchange rate. Some poor buggers on here bought stuff a few years ago when our dollar was only worth 55c US.

They may give a discount. BUT

It would have to a big discount to over come the GST and possibly Import Duty such an order would attract.

When you buy single units with a value under $1000 (including Freight) customs just let it through. Over $1000 then the tax man gets his cut.

We have a free trade agreement with the US so if the vendor clearly marks the goods as product of USA then no problems. Once again under $1000 this is often overlooked.

If these guys have not previously sent goods to Australia they may not supply the correct documentation to customs, then you have to chase for the refund. Import duty for 4wd vehicle parts should be 5%.

But having said all this if you import a single unit neither GST or Import duties would apply.

Same deal regardless of manufacturer. If the goods are not a product of USA (eg cheap chinese import to USA) then full import duty will apply. The manufacturer needs to be able to make the declaration that the goods are of USA origin, it is not worth it to them to make a false declaration.

It should not be a big deal but very worthwhile knowing before you go and try to save by bulk buying or combining to save on freight (eg gears, lockers etc which then value > $1000) unless you are looking at a very big shipment or can pass on the GST etc.

With the way the world is nowadays with the internet and all it is sometimes even easier to buy overseas than interstate.

The customs declaration completed by the vendor attributes a value (either USD or AUD) customs then look at everything over $1000 AUD. And yes there have been cases where people have ordered goods which would have been $999 for instance and through the fluctuation of the exchange rate have then been slugged with $100 worth of GST.

I have had to pay import tariffs to get stuff through customs and then chase the paperwork later, didn't lose money but the waiting to get money back has a bitch factor.

If you import something under $1000AUD total value then there should be absolutely no problems.
