you can also get a rebuild kit fairly cheap, not a bit job i did mine with the help of a mate in my old 97 XJ tdi

i thought the earlier XJ's had different ratio's to the later models, thought they changed with the 3 speed and 4 speed autos

i would be looking at using a rear from a TJ, you can buy a kit to change from the coil spring TJ mount to the Leaf spring XJ mount but you would need to change the front ...

i would not say they are "plagued" with problems, you just need to be a little more carefull with them, such as stay away full on mud and be weary of overheating them as that is the quickest way to kill them as i did with mine

apart from that they are a fantastic motor and not too bad on fuel and ...

i had a similer noise a few years ago with my 97 diesel, turned out i was missing nearly half the teeth from the spider gears, was a fairly easy fix got a rebuild kit from Super F spares and replaced all the gears with new spicer cut gears

Point taken (and also re the maths....) but I wouldn't bet on the $200 thing. I just got a quote on a box 30" by 20" by 20" at 10kg (22lb) at USD $565 for the cheapest UPS serice. delivered to Melbourne. The billable weight is 86lb, which is 39kg.

ok well i have looked into this a little, mainly on the freight side of things

i contacted another company in the US that i have delt with a few times, Rocky Road Outfitters
and they told me that they only freight them via UPS, and charge per carton, but this can be a good thing
he gave me a quote ...

another thing............

many of you have mentioned moving the front diff forward, which is something i will look into doing asap

but just want know if anyone has moved the rear diff backwards, was just thinking if i do both just to get a little more longer wheel base

the VM in question is the Diesel, and i know a few people with these and i have never heard of the heads needing retensioning

and yes it all comes down to matinence, as i have admitted it was my lack of that cause my problem, so no fault but my own, the motor was great

either 2" lift via springs or shackles
2" body lift
trim guards and fit new flares either CJ ot maybe some TJ flares
set of 31" muddies

but you haven't driven a stock Sierra, you maybe surprised at how capable it actually is. better to drive it stock and then figure out what mods you need to do to suit your driving style and obstacles etc.

i have been out with Zooks before, both stock and mildly modded

One thing may have slipped your mind. Have you thought about buying a Sierra and just driving it for a while?

i would also lke to know the reason behind this, tho for me having people in the back will not be much of a problem, will be very rare that i will have anyone in the back of my car, infact i will more than likely remove the rear seat anyway

it was due to have all the cooling system flushed but i was putting it off, they tend to run hot mainly on hot days when you use the aircon :roll: sadly for me i was running late for a meeting it was 40+ degrees and i saw it getting hot but thought i was not far and ...

I ffeel for you with your Jeep , mines in the front yard aswell
with the dash steering column all out back to the bare firewall .

I was quoted $3900 to replace a heater core.
I wouldn,t be suprised if you could get a crate motor over here for half that 12.
i wish i could get one that cheap ...
