Try changing the cup and seat on the gearstick. Cheap and easy if your gearstick flops around in gear this will fix it.

Re: advancing timing

Pinging - Detonation will cause broken rings and damaged big end bearings in the long term or short term if excessively bad if not corrected.
If you can set the static timing at 10-12 it should be fine. Or advance it slowly with the engine running till you hear the revs pick up a little.

Re: 304 V8 Flywheel - still used with auto conversion

Maybe try and find a H/duty flex plate they are made from thicker steel.
Or get a ring made similar to a beadlock outer and bolt it thru the original torque converter holes to stiffen a std flexplate.
Its only purpose would be for the starter motor right.

Re: C4 what mods to do ??

Deeper pan and decent cooler i wouldn't think the V6 will put much strain on it.
If your going to rebuild it its worth getting extra clutch in the forward pack and replace the thrust's with roller bearings-(optional) Also look at the plantery they wear on the trust side from the gears. There is a 6 ...

When you put your truck up on blocks at do this test can you video it for us.
Your spot on with the tacho on the bellhousing and the speedo driven off the output shaft. When the vehicle is up on blocks your not going to prove anything - cause the truck isn't MOVING at 100kph and how do you know that ...

Re: 4-speed-5speed GEARBOX SWAP on BJ42

The "breather tube" is there for when the seal went hard and the gearbox started pumping oil into the transfer it's a cheap easy fix instead of replacing the seal. If you decide to refit the hose it wont cause any problems and might save your gearbox in a few years.
You seem to be doing a good job i ...

Re: Hj61 hf55 Vs Hj60 hf55

There is no difference in the 5spd gearing. Yes the tyre size or diff ratio will have an effect on the speedo and therfore the tacho.
2100 does seem very low for 100kph unless you had a very tall tyre or your speedo had issues. Pretty sure my 80ser sits on 2400 @ 100kph.

Yeah the change could be 10/85. The most common worn part is the HIGH speed gear on the output shaft and the selector sleeve as 99% of the time your in High range. Check the output shaft to, Also the idler gear wears on the inside were the roller bearings run and the idler shaft itself.

Re: 4-speed-5speed GEARBOX SWAP on BJ42

Early t/fer has a 34mm idler shaft and the later is a 38mm i think the change is in 1985. There is also a change in the gears only number of teeth and the idler is obviously different to suit the larger shaft.

It's also i good idea to replace the seat and bush on the gearstick and check the 2x locating pins in the top housing they come loose if the gearstick is sloppy then all those bits are buggered.
Change the oil also like suggested and check the T/fer level the seal between the g/box-t/fer does go ...

Re: 4-speed-5speed GEARBOX SWAP on BJ42

The bellhousing must match the input shaft length. The problem HJ45 is referring to is the angle of the gearbox mounting holes in the bellhousing toyota decided to lower the transfer to get better driveshaft angle.
You may need to mix n match bits. The finished product will be worth the effort but.

Toyota recognised the problem with the old head design with the release of the 79/100ser in 99 they put a radius on the precom hole in the head which helps but isnt a solution to the real problem.

The correct procedure is to machine the head with the precom fitted then remove them and take a finish cut 1-2 thou so they actually protude the gasket takes the extra squish but not many people do it that way anymore.
