Re: 1995 80 series-what to look for when buying?

Thanks. Taking it for a test drive tomorrow. I'm told these drop valves, any idea if this is common and the only known engine problem?

Cheers

1995 80 series-what to look for when buying?

Looking at a 1995 80 series with 1HDFT running an auto. Are there any problem areas to look out for both body/mechanical?
Any problems with the motors to be aware of? This one has 260km on it, but no service history.

I've done a quick search but never seem to get many relevant posts come up ...

1HDT no power/surging

Hi all,
the 80 series is surging under load at low revs (1300), whereas a mates (both manual) has no problem pulling away (both have around 320km)
I'm finding that even in 1st gear on the slightest incline you need to ride the clutch to move off as the surging is that bad you can't pull away.
I've ...

I ran Procomps in the SWB GQ, and OME in the GU shorty (only because the Pro Comps were brought over from oz for the GQ)
Own a 80 series Cruiser now  but will go for Pro Comps again for that

I have found that too many companies make shocks and list them as 3-4", 5-6" etc when they in fact don't suit these lifts at all.

I ran 3" dobinson coils, and the TJM shocks I was recommended had 25mm travel left, and ran OME L series which were supposedly for a 4" lift.

At the end of the day, IMO ...

Noobie VX questions

Hi all,
I've had a quick look, and can't find anything in the bible etc, so hoping someone may be able to help.

I've just bought a 1990 VX Jap Import, and it runs a part time 4wd setup, with push button Hi range 4wd, or transfer low range.
It also runs a different steering dampner, and the shocks ...

I think Shane sells rubber castor bushes? We can't get the rubber bushes here, and the OME etc are crap, you lose flex, and they crack/split in no time at all

I ran 3" lift in my GQ and GU shorties. Didn't want castor bushes so ran drop boxes, and 16mm longer trailing arms with a slight vibration if the tailshaft didn't get a regular lube.

Look at the front left tyre, looks like its had a blow out. Could have happened at high speed and then lost control and went head on with something big. Re: worst accident damaged patrol i have seen

I'd say by the looks of it, the car is loaded with household items (is that a washing machine or a dryer??) Certainly looks to be full of household items so maybe leaving home? Then maybe leaving home in unhappy circumstances .... then maybe driven into oncoming truck in an act of self harm ...

Since when? Have never "needed" to run swaybars on my shorty with superior arms, in fact, they aren't even drilled to bolt them on to start with

I think it is quite a nice car. Looks great, and is here and registered.

I thought the 2.8L was the go though as they can be easily swapped for the 4.2L.

Other than that I don't think the shorties had a 4.2TD :(
I thought there was a TD42T option.....

The Japanese market for some reason didn't ...

I ran 4" lift with 33's on my GQ and GU shorties, it's personal preference really. You don't need a 4" lift to clear 33's, and you save a few dollars if you don't go higher than 3" as you will get away without adjustable panhards

Yeah, can't just bring one over on holiday. I only bought the shorty as we had planned to move over for work, but have put it off for a while, so buying something more suitable for towing/off road.
We will be buying another when we decide to make the move
